    Double fliers?

I am not the world's best shot, but I am not that bad either. So on our monthly big bore shoot where we fire 6 shots at an array of targets that pose some sort of challenge, like move to point, shoot, move and shoot another, etc, I can easily hit the bull 5/6 and the other is just in the next...

    A Double in .458 win?

I bought my Verney Carron in 375 Flanged to overcome any misgivings about ejector problems and this was strongly advised by Jerome who was with them then. There is very little in the argument of the 375FL being less powerful than the 375H&H and some claim it's 2400fps to be an advantage. So the...

Thank you @ActionBob. Interesting that yet another double likes Hornady, mine too, thank you @Hornady for making good ammo fur us. From a price point and value for money the Iphisi is very interesting, nay tempting. Several of my buddies are keen because of the commonality of 375 H&H here, but...

    Round Chambered…or Not?

I can think of nothing worse than accidentally shooting my PH, or a tracker, or anyone else for that matter. That would be far worse than the pleasure of shooting my buff, and to me anyway, far worse than being injured myself. So it all comes down to minimising the chances of that happening. The...

Hello Tom, I know of several folks who are interested in this double, but the truth is that there is very little feedback, specifically a field test. How does it shoot, ie regulation, balance and accuracy? Have there been any reliability issues? Has anyone used it on a hunt? It is a really good...

    Cape Buffalo Mount Question

If I am not mistaken almost none of the original skull is used in a skin mount, it is a fibre glass hollow case to which your horns are attached and the cape put over the form. So I very much doubt they will look identical, call it artistic license to present a great mount. What you have looks...

What did you do with your Cape buffalo skin?

A vertical brief case or mail bag as they were known. The stiffer buffalo hide works well for this. Shown is a similar thing made by Els Fine Leather, they are top notch.

My wife is a botanist and did a London diploma in making skin care creams. She makes a special one based upon kigelia, which is common, but hers has about four other ingredients, one of which is rare and damn expensive, I know I pay for it! Anyway it almost magically gets rid of skin cancer when...

    Best balls

You haven't lived until you have eaten buffalo balls, tripe and tongue, preferably from the same animal. Of course you can also try a bit of the fillet if you wish. Our foray into buffalo tail was a disaster, it needs a good 8 hours simmering.

The earlier ones came with a cloth covered headband like this. Later ones have a vinyl leather band which sweats a lot. So wrap around that toweling used for tennis racket handles. The chin strap is very useful, just flip it down when needed.

Melville and Moon are the SA suppliers and they also retail through Safari and Outdoor in Johannesburg, stellenbosch and Pretoria. I think Safari Supplies (?) carries their range in the USA. They come in a light colour and brown, the brown is better for the bush.

How do you guys handle ear protection whilst on safari?

First comes the chirp of the ox-peckers. Then they go silent. Then comes the snapped twig. Then comes the buffalo. Only then comes the bang, and to be certain at that point I would be far more interested in protecting my butt than my ears.

A late friend of mine who was very much the Brit in Africa sort never wore a pithy. So I quizzed him as to why and he said 'the wife thinks I look like a dickhead as it is'.

One final rodeo, bolt-action or double rifle for my last big bore thumper?

Having had the good fortune to lay eves on more new Heym 89's than most will, and handled most of those too, I was so taken by the form of these beautiful rifles without any adorning at all that I ordered a plain one. It is like a beautiful woman with no makeup. The factory offered me edge...

One final rodeo, bolt-action or double rifle for my last big bore thumper?

This is an easy one, of course go with a double! I could say I am biased because I own a Heym, having been faced with the same choice as you are now going through. But in all honesty, after a lot of searching and examining the various features of the various offerings, their respective strengths...

Reading the politics thread these days I am reminded of the scale of polarity: Points of view to opinions to entrenched positions. And the actions it precipitates: Disagreement to vehemence to anger to aggression. It seems that in an election cycle everything gets more scratchy, even on...

    Any Other Interests???

The flesh is great tasting, but it is riddled with tiny sharp bones, so hardly worth the effort. One compromise is to fillet off slabs to exclude as much bone as possible then fry it in batter and pickle it with onions and pepper corns. Three weeks later and the fine bones are less daunting...
