.300 Rem Ultra Mag

was going to start reloading.300RUM down to 30-06 power level , has anyone done this ? And any input ? My 3006 load now is 49.5 gr of 4064 180 gr psp at 2727 fps. Thought it would good to use this rifle a little. It is a Rem 700 with 26” barrel . Comments please

I know Remington does or at least used to load the RUM in three power levels so you could decide between .30-06 power, .300 win mag power, or full RUM power.

Just check your reloading manual, it should list quite a few down powered loads for the .300 RUM with proven loads. You want a fuller case than one with a lot of space left over once the powder charge is in.

You have to be careful with a light load. It could actually cause more problems than a heavy one.

A friend uses just one rifle for all of his North American big game hunting and it is a 300 RUM. When hunting he uses full power loads but that only amounts to a few rounds per year. The remainder of the shooting is done at targets and plinking. For this he uses loads that are in the 30-06 performance levels. I don't recall what powder he settled on but there was a trade-off: the slower powders filled the case better (80%) but were less consistent in their ignition, while the faster powders had better ignition but left a lot of vacant space in the case. With these less dense loads prior to firing he would point the muzzle into the air so that the powder would settle back against the primer so that the flash would start the powder burning from the back and go forward. This made for reduced max/min and SD of the velocities and presumably more consistent pressures.

One word... "Detonation" !

" Jim P" is right when he urges caution on light charging a really big case.

The 300 rum was designed to shoot a high BC bullet at long range to do some really exciting damage that few animals can walk away from if hit right.

Why do you want to download something so big?

Why do you want to download something so big?

Basically to use the rifle more ,it has been only used on a Wyoming elk hunt in 2001 But I regularly shoot it , not as much as the 30-06 but more than most people do.

For a reduced recoil load that is more comfortable to shoot load up some 150 grain bullets or even drop down to a 125 grain one. If you can get the 125's to shoot in your rifle they would be fun on parrie dogs.
