500 MDM

I like the concept of the B&M rifles, short handy, light weight. So after reading the whole website I started to look around for one. I found 2 for sale on gunbroker one in 50 B&M one in 500 MDM. The stock on the 50 was ugly but the price was ok. So I decided I wanted to speak to the seller and set up a gunbroker account. Well I screwed up the security code and was locked out of my account before I even had one. Here is where I go off the rails a little. I know Paul T knows the seller of the 500 from his posts here, Mr B&M himself. So I PM Paul T and explain my situation, cause now I have to have this rifle before someone else gets it! A few messages back and fourth and I get an email from Mr McCourry the seller. I told him consider the rifle sold. All well and good he put a sold sign up on gunbroker. So what I forgot being a newbie was I bought it for the buy it now price. Ok not the end of the world but was little disappointed at my haste. The following day he contacted me, and without me asking split the difference. Mr McCourry told me he would set me up with this rifle. He sent along some loaded ammo, brass and bullets. I could not be happier with every aspect of the purchase. Even if I overpayed I don't care. The recoil isn't to bad 450 gr @ 2400 fps, 500 gr @ 2300 is stout. Have not shot for accuracy yet still shooting off hand getting used to it, the handling is great. Been pulling 375 RUM loaded ammo for the brass to fire from and saving the 300 gr A Frames for my 375. I will be looking for some M 70's cause my kids need one too, and I need a 458 B&M. The links on the B&M site are a wealth of knowledge backed up by research and field testing. Anyone on the fence give them a try you will not be disappointed if a wildcat interests you. It is by far my favorite big bore round/platform configuration.

I really like what I am reading about these rifles and cartridges. How does it compare with the more standard (500 NE or 500 Jeff) in terms of recoil and muzzle blast? I ask because of the very light frame they are built on and the short barrel. Just trying to get a sense of the "tradeoffs" that physics requires in all matters

I have never shot either of those cartridges. I do have some loaded rounds that came with the rifle. I'm not home to refer to them I believe they are marked as 500 gr @2300 fps and 450 gr @2400 fps. The barrel is 20" no blast that I notice. In terms of recoil my perception is stiff but manageable. I'd rather shoot this rifle than my CZ 416 Rigby with 400 gr A frames from Double Tap. I would also prefer to carry this rifle all day compared to the CZ also.

The back story on the rifle and why it was for sale, it was a tip for a PH. When it came time to pay for the rifle the buyer backed out. Up for sale it went. The stock was plane Jane for a working rifle which I'm fine with. I did notice a fit issue with the bottom metal and let it go for a bit. It was bought off the picture and sight unseen. So I emailed then spoke with Accurate Innovations the stock maker. They felt confident they could make some adjustments, and fit as it should. So the rifle is on the way to NC. There are good but limited bullet choices in .500 especially at the velocity the cartridge can push them at. In hind sight a .458 may have been more versatile, but you cant argue the results posted here and elsewhere on the 500.

The great thing about a cartridge that can really push a bullet to high speed.... you can always back them down and have a round that is still incredible effective, but at much less pressure! a 570 grain bullet at 2,100 to 2,150 whould flatten anything that walks. plus your expensive brass would last longer... and if you just want to have fun, cast bullets from that rifle at about 1,500 fps would be amazing inside 150 yards on anything that walks North America!

Treeman, appreciate that this cartridge is a handloading cartridge only, requiring fire-forming the .375 RUM case up to .50 cal.
Also, true .50 cal hunting projectiles are limited, but available.
If those limitations do not phase you feel free to pm me and I will out you in touch with the person you need to speak to aquire your own 500 mdm.

Hi Paul. Ok, not sure why they aren’t going through, but I guess it’s safe to say I’m beginning the journey into building or purchasing a .500 MDM. My first choice would be to find one in stainless with an 18” or 20” barrel already built, but let’s see where this goes.
