Does anyone have some experience with the 9.3 and black powder? The 9.3X72 ( or 74 for that matter) This is a generous capacity case generally loaded to low pressure, and should do well with 1 and 1/2F or even CTG black. If anyone has a good load for this please let me know, nothing of note I can find on the web.............FWB

cant help you, but i was wondering why you would want to load a 9.3x72 or 74r with black powder ?

Spike...................mostly just to do it. Large volume, low pressure cases make the best BP numbers. And the 9.3X72 has been available in the relatively inexpensive Ruger No. 1, costing about 1/4 of a good Shiloh Sharps rifle. An open sited blackpowder cartridge gun turns most any critter into a trophy. ......FWB

The 9.3x72r was a common combination gun caliber with 30/30 (more or less) capability. It has survived well into the nitro era and is still factory loaded with smokeless powder at Low pressure. I have a hammer drilling that has killed at least one deer since I have owned it. I am sure it could be loaded with BP though it would be very marginal on anything bigger than a roe deer and then inside 100 yards.

I was unaware that Ruger ever chambered anything in 9.3x72 - 9.x74 yes - but that is a serious big game round.

16ga,16ga, 9.3X72 drilling on sale has my attention....and it would do fine with black powder.......RL you're right about the Ruger...............it is a 9.3X74....and I may end up with it instead, but would still load it with black.............FWB

First of all, I only have experience with the cartridge 9,3x74R. This cartridge will be produced by some Manufacures in Germany e.g. RWS.

The old cardridge 9,3x72R is an obsolete cartridge. Only Reloaders have the opportunity to shoot ammunition for this caliber.

The cartridge has a max. Pressure of 2'000 bar which means a little bit more than 29'000 psi.

You can´t get ammunation from Sellier&Bellot in CH ? Their 9,3x72R with 12,5g bullet isn´t expensive , but precise ....

Flatwater Bill , I am currently in the process to purchase all reamers/re-loading dies for the 9.3 x 70 Brenneke caliber ...but I think it is not compatible to black powder ...it is the largest caliber Brenneke developed ...rifle in this caliber was build for Herman Goering ..

I have often wondered about loading the 9.3x74 with black powder.
it is impossible to give a load , as different lots of black powder can vary in density.
here is how you do it.
you need to establish where the base of the bullet is in the neck.
ideally there is room in the neck to have a thin (card or cooking greaseproof paper) wad under the bullet, a grease wad, and another wad under the grease wad on top of the powder
the starting charge should be up to the bottom wad.
increasing the charge 1 gn at a time will require compressing the powder to get the same column height.
this should be done with a compression die not the bullet, as the bullet might be deformed.
at some stage of compression you will find best accuracy.
also compression will mostly improve powder burn, meaning you will get more shots without cleaning before you cannot chamber a round.
composition of the grease wad is important.
most of the lubes you buy are for grease grooves, and as wads are a little too hard.
when yo chamber a round into a dirty barrel, blowing into the chambers will help soften the fouling.
you might find pistol primers give better ignition than rifle primers, but not necessarily.
another way to make grease wads is to soak the grease into felt.

research has shown only bullets of from 186 gn to 193 gn in this cartridge.
this suggests a slow rifling twist unable to stablize modern bullets from 230 to 300 gns.
