Had read Ruark's Horn of the Hunter prior to my first trip to Africa in 2016...and read the original article by Ruark entitled "Suicide Made Easy".....Well, I'm still VERTICAL....and am returning for my second hunt in July....bringing my oldest son for his first hunt. We are answering the call of the horn! I have told him if he sees Africa he may never want to return home. In a perfect world, my retirement dream would be to drop me off on one oceanside in Africa and pick me up on the other when I'm done hunting across the continent...or spread my ashes across the birthplace of mankind. I've never felt so 'at home' and immediately comfortable in any place in my life as being in Africa on my first trip. Looking forward to the next trip and sharing it with my son!

Enjoy every minute hunting with your son!

G'day Lee!

Enjoy your hunt with your son - and don't forget to post up pics with a report.

I can recommend 2 classic books on African hunting:
1) "Hunter" by J A Hunter (no intro necessary!), and,
2) "Uganda Safari" by Brian Hearne (very frank and funny in places, with a photo of a 3-tusked elephant).

Great to have you with us!

Welcome to AH Lee. We’d like to hear about your 2016 hunt.

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS FOR MY RIFLE, ALWAYS APPROACH A NEW LOAD CAUTIOUSLY!!*
Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}
Peterson .280AI brass, CCI 200 primers, 56.5gr of 4831SC, 184gr Berger Hybrid.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
