Has to be over hounds in order to give you the best chance at bagging a cat.

Just like our mountain lions. Still no guarantee. I’ve chased mountain lions three times unsuccessfully. I only see them out of season. Some day hopefully.
Caracal, serval, genet and honey badger are all on my bucket list.

Nice waterbuck!

That waterbuck looks like it’s got good mass..

Yes sir, but the first step in the rigbt direction is hunting the correct area, and when it comes to Caracal over hounds, there is no better area than either the Eastern Cape or Kwa-zulu Natal over a registered pack.

Extraordinary quality animals often require extraordinary circumstances to fall into place. I’m sure I don’t have to explain this to you, just looking back at your Waterbuck and how things had to fall into place.
On this one, the hunter took a snap shot at a running Waterbuck, where only his neck was visible above the brush.

Thank you my friend. I’m waiting for flight details of when we going to Benin. You can take the Buff, I’ll take the Roan.
Checking my emails every morning with disappointment :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

When you put on a hound hunt for caracal do you tree the animal?

In other words can you describe the hunt for me?

Charlie, there are two ways, and I’ve done them both.
I notify the houndsman that I would like to be notified once the dogs are on a cat. I do this on your arrival day. The dogs are then run every day for the duration of your hunt. If we have not heard anything by 11:00 on a day, chances are pretty much done for the day. Scent is strongest in the morning, when there is still moisture on the ground.
Once this dries, your chances for that day start to diminish quickly. So, we carry on hunting, while the dogs run in the background. Once the houndsman feels that the dogs are chasing well and closing in on the cat, he will let us know which area he is in, and that we need to move closer. He can hear this, just from the pitch of his chasing dogs.
We will then catch the last part of the chase and follow the valleys by the sound of the dogs, until we hear that they have treed. Once we have established this, we will move into the area carefully, and hopefully spot the cat.
The Caracal does tree and we shoot majority of them treed, but I have also seen some big Toms stand and fight the dogs on the ground.
I have also done it the way to run with the dogs from the beginning, but feel that one loses too much time this way.
By having the dogs run in the background, we get to carry on hunting, and catch the last part of the chase once we get the call.
On Caracal, male and female cats are taken.

Awesome, did you measure the croc?

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
