Good Morning
We have just returned form Niassa L2 with Operator Johan Calitz
Party consisted of 2 guys from Namibia and a South African. Experienced Rilfes - 404 Jeffery, 450 Rigby, 416 Mauser, 300 Win Mag
Hunt was conducted by PH Johan Panzegrouw and PH Kobus Calitz, Rilfes 500NE, 600NE
Hunt booked 1-14 Nov 2014 -- 3 x Buf, 1 x Sable , 1 x Eland, Bushpigs and Bush buck as an afterthought 11 Day Safari planned, Available species were the above as well as Lion, Leopard, Ele, Croc.
Paperwork done by Tharia from JCS in SA, Amazing!!!! as it was on short notice. Logistics by own Plane into area, dirt strip, armed guards for plane - 24hr
Two Hunting vehicles used - Landcruiser and Landrover - Good Condition with everything available, minor breakdowns and repairs on the spot
Two Trackers per vehicle, good skills and very motivated
Camp Staff, about 15 incl skinners etc, very well motivated and doing a sterling job.
No Scouts from Reserve, anti poaching units x 6 in small camps throughout area
Area is 4200km2, very dry, with two rivers running through it -- Luatise and the Lechenda, South Western Corner of Niassa
Camp is fantastic on the banks of the Lechenda, Every Hunter in its own Safari Tent with brick ablution facilities, Power is 12V in tents and 220V in Dining area with WiFi via Satelite
Comms are with Sat Phones, Radios less effective as area so big
This place is REMOTE - milk can be purchased in the shops, but is 10hr away by 4x4 track!!, My type of place!!
Food is excellent with three course meal in the evenings, well suited for Overseas palates, n little more braaing for us Nam okes would have been great!! We did not have breakfast in the morning, lunch/brunch in the veld under a tree like the old days, no cold beers unfortunately, Water aplenty while walking, carried by trackers and personally, emergency medical kit carried by PH while walking
Tsetse are ferocious, 30-50 bites per day/hunter - enough warm beer makes it bearable at the end of the day on the way back to camp
Temps were in the high 30's and low 40's - not for sissies ,as it was in the shade - 4-5L of water drunk per day
Area is very dry with pools in the river. Unfortunately very few roads so we were driving the same roads to looks for spoor every day. Only 150 000ha utilised for hunt as no roads made in the rest of the area
Game is seasonal, I guess, as we saw lots of tracks from earlier in the season. Very few Buf, good amounts of Sable ( herds of 20 or so ), Bohm's Zebra, Licthenstein Hartebees, Eland, Ele and small plains game
Reports of Buf herds while we were there, not seen, Ele occasionally, nice 45-50 lb bull seen
Method of hunting pretty standard -- Driving from 5:00am on 4x4 tracks, looking for spoor and then tracking on foot until Buf found. Lots of driving and Lots of walking!!
Trophies taken: Buff x 3 -- All old Dagga Boys, 39", 40" and Helmet( both horns broken ) All on foot after tracking for 1.5 to 5km (11km on 1 day) through bush, Plains game -- 39" Sable, Massive Old Livingstone Eland, 15" Bushbuck
In Summary -- Very well organized hunt with in a splendid, remote, beautiful area.
