I recently have acquired a CZ 550 safari classic in 375 H&H. After many years of wanting one, I finally was able to get one. I am very excited to have it because I have wanted one every since my first trip to Africa as a kid. I am also very excited to enter the big bore club. I would like to ask you all your opinions on ammunition.

I hope to one day take it over to Africa for dangerous game and other big plains games animals. What are types of ammunition would be good for general African hunting?

It will be mostly used for North America big game like elk, buffalo, grizzlies, moose, etc. what types of ammunition would be good for this?

I appreciate everyone’s opinions and information, I am new to the club and want to learn. Thanks

Factory ammo I assume? For an all rounder I'd go with 300 grain Hornady DGX bonded, specifically for buffalo I would go with Norma loaded with 300 grain A-frames.
Ditto on this….

Yes factory ammo, I forgot to mention that. I want to eventually start reloading but I want to first get a feel for the caliber and get some field experience with it first. I know the cost of rounds isn’t cheap even before the ammo cost rise so reloading is definitely the way to go. Thanks for the info.

Does anyone have any opinions on either Hornady outfitter 250 gr gmc or Nosler partition 260 gr pt?

I know the grain is light for dangerous game but I thought they could work well for North American big game hunting.

I'm a one-bullet-per-rifle guy.

I don't think you can better a 300 Gr TSX. Mine shot them exceptionally well.

Those look like good rounds. Can you use hollow points for African dangerous game? Or do you need to use solids? It has been a minute since I read on that.

I beat those would do just the trick for anything here in North America.

Nice score! In my humble opinion …

* OTC Ammo: for bigger body nasty trophies - Federal Premium Safari grade ammo is hard to beat. Nickel plated brass, a nice selection of the top bullet brands, there may be lower end grain @ 270-grain but most offerings are 300-grain & up so have a look.

* OTC Handload Ammo: here you can dial-in a lighter grain for your N. American hit-list. Hendershots (I’ve used) & Buffalo Bore.

Enjoy your new Big Bore fire stix! Happy Trails

Either of those bullets will work perfectly on North American big game.

If you want cheap ammunition for practice, plinking get some PPU ammunition. Relatively as cheap as chips.
Federal Powershok in a Bullet weight of 270 grains will serve you well against all soft skinned animals At a relatively reasonable price.
Once you decide to up the game to dangerous game you’ll want to up the bullet weight and choose something else.

Stick with one of the premium soft bullets like the Swift A-Frame, Norma Oryx, Federal TBBC or Barnes TSX. Bullet weights from 270-350 grains work well, but 300 grains is the "normal" weight. If DG is on the menu 300 grains and up is the way to go for the SD to stay above .300 and give better penetration.

Find a premium monolithic solid that shoots to the same POA/POI. Good places to start are the Woodleigh Hydro, Nosler Solids or Cutting Edge Bullet Solids. Again, keep the weight above 300 grains, most likely matching the weight of your soft.

I don't like switching stuff around for hunting North America or going to Africa. Switching stuff around like having different bullet weights and ballistic charts for each invites problems. My recommendation is to pick one and stick with it.

300 Gr Federal Trophy Bonded Bear Claw soft points for plains game and everything except elephant or rhino.

300 Gr Norma PH monolithic solids for elephant and rhino.

If you hand load, then 300 Gr Rhino Solid Shanks and 300 Gr Rhino monolithic brass solids.

I’ve used 250 gr Barnes TTSX which is very similar to the GMX. I took duiker to eland and will use again for plains game. I’d feel very comfortable using it for elk or moose if I decided to take my 375.

I am a nosler guy. Shot buff, with 300 gr accubonds, ele with 300 gr nosler solids, lion, croc, moose, eland, elk, grizzly and tons of PG with 260 gr accubond. Just need to practice and ensure POI is same. Issue may be finding factory ammo on the shelf, may need to just get what's available so you can shoot.

Can we buy the rhino solid shank in the USA? It’s looks very similar to the fail safe bullets Winchester used to make. I have killed moose, elk, deer, and caribou with them. They were my go to for over a decade.

Congratulations on the purchase. The 375 is a lot of fun to get to know.

Hers some pictures. Just picked it up a little while ago. It is so cool! Years of waiting has paid off. I think I hear a buffalo or maybe a hippo calling my name.

Do you have any cull hunts available? 7 days, daily rate plus per animal price?
