Headed out tomorrow morning 50 miles east of here. A guy I used to work with has some acreage to hunt on. Been going there for the last 22+ years. He said with all of the rain we’ve had, he’s never seen so many wild sunflowers. I really just want to see that more than even the dove hunting. I know weird, but as I get older, that’s where my feeble mind is at. LOL

Enjoy every detail.

Good luck! So far it's been a pretty quiet opening morning for me here in North Texas. Haven't seen any doves yet, and have only heard one shot in the distance. I hear that we have a really good dove population this year, though, so fingers crossed. At least the weather is nice for the moment.

Normally the whitewings would have been here a week or two ago. Thus far only the local morning doves are on the place. I know most of them by name. We have not had a drop of rain on our place since mid-May and almost sixty days of 100+ temps with no end in sight. I have a feeling the whitewings decided northern Mexico looked about as good as central Texas.

When I lived in the SE. I loved dove hunting.

Initially I did not understand what all the hype was about.

Until I went on my first dove hunt. And learned the culture around it.
Seeing the older gentleman sitting on a bucket with a retriever next to them. They would see who could get their limit with the fewest shells from their 20 gauges.
A very social hunt

I live in AZ as well. Got in late last night. Mayby last flight into Sky Harbor. Was a healthy storm. I’m waiting till Monday.Have a feedlot Eurasian back up as well. Starts the whole year off!

Well, the hunting wasn't all that great this morning. Not a lot of doves. My buddy got four and I got three and I lost one. By noon it was close to 100 degrees, which is highly unusual for Sept. 1st. There's food everywhere in vast acreage of now drying out wild sunflowers. Three to five feet high and THICK. I'll try again in a few weeks after it cools down a bit. If the temps drop into the low to mid forties, the northern birds will migrate south and the shooting can be fantastic, especially this year with all the seed around.

Had multiple folks limit out today south of Austin, TX! Had a good experience with a service at $150/gun. My first organized Texas dive hunt. I have never wanted a gun dog more!

We had 2" July 5th and another 2" when the storm push through last week. Our temps have not been as high, I'm sure that is due to being on the coast and our 20+ MPH winds we always have. Heat index on the other hand have been over 110 a lot this year. The rain was enough to turn some of the grass green most is still brown. We have been seeing a good number of dove so far this year. I'm hoping when season for the south zone opens they will be moving a little better.

Last year was able to limit out almost every afternoon I went. The few I did limit out had 12 and it was my shooting not lack of opportunity.

I will be dove hunting as well Here at the ranch. We don't have big numbers but with some persistence you can shoot a limit.

Water is key here in central Texas. It has been brutally dry. I bought several Chiappa Triple Crowns as a novelty several years ago. Crazy thing is I immediately liked the one I shot. I gave one to a buddy I gave the handle “plug” to as a joke. EVERY year he came out he would show up with a gun (plug removed during previous quail season) and we would seek or fabricate a plug out of salt cedar.

Local birds are providing good action here at the ranch. I do love this annual
tradition with family and friends.

Yep..

Love dove hunting… but after 2 trips to Argentina in the last 5 years… I’m kinda ruined…

Hopefully with much needed rain this weekend some water will stand in my ponds, our south zone Alabama season kicks off on the ninth and I’m planning a teal hunt in the morning and dove hunt in the afternoon. Cleaned up around the sunflower field last weekend and had a good bunch of birds coming in. A pretty good mix of white wings and morning dove. Only seen a couple of teal on any available water so far but keeping fingers crossed.

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.
