Please talk me out of this...

I'm just gonna put this right here...

I would love a double in 30-06, that way I could get lots of practice with a doulbe rifle for a much lower cost than say a 470 NE.

@R.M.C. - the thing is that I'd be ordering it now, getting it around November, paying whenever I want and getting it pretty much at cost. So I think at this point I may go for it... I'm still a bit hesitant on which caliber to choose, and what to tell them to regulate it for.

Tom, you should know that "The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it"!
You have to!
At this point it's more a matter of caliber than a matter of if...
Me, I vote for 8x57R, I definitely want a rimmed cartridge in a double, and this 8 is the perfect middle point, making a light gun but powerful enough for (apart Africa) some wonderful hunts in Europe, like Red Deer bugle and driver hunt for Wild Boars, and maybe one day you'll partecipate to a Monterias in Spain...
So - definitely - do it, do it soon, and do it 8!

Kevin--darn, a "double double" hunt... hadn't thought of that. Thank God my wife thinks that walnut and steel procreate spontaneously in the gun-safe.... So tempted....
I did that last August, fun.

Yep. I remember. That was one of the most epic reports I've read on this site.

I was recently at the Chapuis factory in France, and I had a chance to play with their diminutive RGEX double rifles. For some reason, the trim 28-ga round action, together with the niceness of the wood and the compact barrel size (something I normally do NOT like compared to a longer barrel/shorter forend combination) really intrigued me.

Also, the idea of owning a double rifle in a small caliber like 7x57R, 8x57R or .30-06 kind of makes me want one, especially because I can get it at a substantial discount and I can have it regulated for whatever ammo I choose.

Am I crazy for wanting one? It would be my second new double and may make a fun overall non-dangerous-game number--but on the other hand, I could use that money for another few animals in Africa for either this year or 2023. This is where my disease for collecting rifles gets me into trouble...

Hi Tom,

I think that a 30-06 would be hard to beat. Yea I know rimless cases, but it’s not a DG rifle. plus easy ammo. Don’t know that much about the Chapuis though.

JP

@JPetroni - Chapuis is pretty darn good at making a reliable extraction/ejection system for rimless. I have one of their new .375 H&H Iphisi doubles an I pretty much need a catcher's mitt if I want to hold on to the brass flying out of the barrels. .30-06 is definitely in the running as one of my fave calibers--plus it goes with another Chapuis I have (one of their straight-pulls).

Another thought. I have always opined that a 30-06 double with single trigger and scoped would be super fast (no fumbling a second moving to another trigger) would be like shooting a semi auto and you could still choose what barrel first if using different cartridges for the first Shot.

JP

Hi, J.--Chapuis does not yet have a barrel selector on their doubles. It's coming in the near future, but probably not within the next 12-18 months.

I am a gun guy first and hunter second. I say go for it if you can.

Well, so far the only calibers they offer in the smaller models are 9.3x74R, 8x57R, .30-30, and upon request .30-06, .30 Blaser, 7x57R and 6.5x57R. I'd probably go with either the .30-06 or one of the x57s. What I like about the 8x57R is that most commercial offerings (for which it would be regulated) are for the 196gr bullet. Sellier & Bellot also offers two loads in 7x57R with a 170+gr bullet. Tempting.

BTW, you guys are no help talking me out of it! :ROFLMAO:

Tom, you didn’t really expect us to did you? Go with the 8x57R and enjoy!

A double in 8×57r would be an excellent rifle for driven boar if that's something you're interested in. A second barrel set in 6.5x57r would give you a lovely woodland stalking rifle for roe as well.

Personally I think it's nice to have a rimmed case in a double. Even if 3006 would eject fine.

I would love to tell you to be responsible but I have wanted a medium bore double for a few years now. I actually want an O/U but wouldn't turn down a SxS. As to caliber, I agree that the 8x57r would be my choice but if I could do another set of barrels I would add in the 6.5x57r.

Do you have any cull hunts available? 7 days, daily rate plus per animal price?
