Hardly. Some or most of your examples may not have been “religion-based” at all if carefully examined. But alas, that inspection of the details of historical truth may not fit a narrative that may reveal an inconvenient truth. Many so-called religious wars may not be so religious upon closer examination. They have been conveniently labeled so by atheistic or agnostic historians who also want to create a narrative. Also, “religion” may have been used as a convenient label for rulers or leaders to justify their actions and/or used as a recruitment tool to encourage reluctant conscripts or volunteers to sign up to fight. IMO, most conflicts are primarily based on ambitions for power, control, wealth or resources. Do you really think King Richard of England, during his Crusade, traveled all the way to Jerusalem for the sole purpose of saving Christianity?? I don’t buy it, but you can buy whatever interpretation of history you like. Remember, you are the one who used the Crusades as a prime, generic example of “religious wars”.

Can you provide us with a credible reference that states that the Crusades were not, in fact, based on religion? Given that they were initially directed by Pope Urban II as an effort to reclaim Jerusalem from Islamic rule that had threatened Christian communities and pilgrimages from the West, that sounds like a religious cause to me. Did the Crusaders fill their pockets while fighting Islam? Of course. For two reasons; first, the cost of mounting the Crusades was quite expensive. Richard I, who by the way is my 42nd great uncle, literally sold most everything he had to finance his army and their journey. Second, by relieving the Muslims of their wealth, it made it more of a challenge for them to mount a defense in future incursions.

Careful, though the movies have long castigated and ridiculed preachers, THEY ALSO DO IT TO 2ND A PEOPLE, HUNTERS AND CONSERVATIVES IN GENERAL. Not a good source to lean on.

Some of the best most diligent historians/archaeologists are Christians. Even some who are not, like David Rohl (an admitted unbeliever) author of "Pharaohs and Kings" come up with archaeological verification of Bible claims and historical sites. His new chronology of Pharaohs is brilliant and long overdue. But in coming to his conclusions, he now believes in the annhililation of a Pharoah's army, along with all senior religious leaders in the Red Sea, and if you can fathom it, a naturalistic explanation of "when the sun stood still and the moon stayed." (a polar shift placing Israel temporarily at the North Pole) He believes this is recorded in ancient anthologies such as the Algonquin belief that the sun was "caught in a rabbit trap for three days" the "long night saga" of the Polynesian people, tidal waves in Greece and the Nile delta and many more which happened at the same time historically. Heathen historians are not the only authorities in the field, though Rohl is technically, I suppose, one of them. There are lots if interesting minutiae but I do agree that religion itself is beyond the extremely limited scope of a hunting blog's politics section.
We all have to limit ourselves to why we came here. Having said that, if folks get snippy, especially outside their bailiwick, it provokes a response.

Indeed, tens of millions have died under the Muslims alone. (but way over a hundred million civilians under communist rule) Surely a more transparent inspection of such wars, sparing no one due responsibility could help us prevent such travesties. War is hell.

I have a NEWS FLASH for you. No one is excited or happy about killing Palestinian CIVILIAN Muslims or Christians. What people see a need for is the DESTRUCTION of Hamas and other terrorist organizations. Some civilians will.unfortunately die as a result. If the terrorists are not hunted down and destroyed there, they come here. Remember 9/11/01? Nothing very much has changed. Supporting Israel in their war for a right to exist is not a continuation of the Crusades, it is self defense.
