Simson & Co. Questions

I have a pre war 405 Win double and a 20ga Double rifle that Bob also built. @crs helped me with a introduction to Marie on the purchase of the 20ga. I wan't fortunate enough to have communicated with Bob, but from everything folks who knew him have said he was a true gentleman.

The Simson will be a great doner action for your build. Also If you want something a bit larger than a 45/70 I have a 45/100 reamer in the shop you are welcome to use.

AZDAVE, thank you kindly, you are very generous ...I will definitely make use of your offer to use the reamer...I also have available a 8x68S reamer and a 6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser reamer if you are in need of such a reamer...
I will contact HWL , a member on our forum and ask if he can find me a Simson side x side action in a 16 ga ..I believe the 16 ga will be still strong enough to build the 45/100 caliber on ...
I would like to hear your and CRS ``s opinions in this regards???? As mentioned, I have Johan Greyling who will assist me in this build..Johan Greyling already commence building his own version of a double rifle action ...(y)(y)(y)(y)

I really would appreciate it very much if you gentleman will be able to give me Marie`s contact details??I want to ask her again about the two .450 NE nr 2 Jeffery rifle barrels I previously nearly bought ...due to Bob`s untimely passing this opportunity did not present it self...

I will PM you her email address ASAP.

Done.

Gert,
I just recalled that Ellis Brown used a 16 gauge Simson as a donor for his 450 3/14 NE with 25 inch barrels. In fact there are multiple pix of this DR in his book; looking at one now.
Looks like a very handy rifle.
You can order the book online:

I am not a gunsmith, but enjoyed the read and learned a lot.

Love those side clips!

I wonder how many hours it took to do all that engraving?
Good luck with the auction.

Could not get it... simply to expensive.

But I bought a 20 ga. SxS working shotgun, I could afford.

;)

Good for you.
I carry my 20 more than my 12 these days and on a good day, it does the job just as well:

Parker Repro 20 in Kansas.

I can see that @crs is sending you the contact info so I won't duplicate the information. Hopefully she can locate the barrels and reamer

That sidelock is beautiful! Simson made some fine shotguns and rifles.

Now I feel bad, because I have to slaughter my 20 ga for making the double rifle....

Gert,
It just occurred to me that you could make a 45-90 and shoot both 45-70 and 45-90 ammo. The 45-90 would be a hand loading deal, but I have a lot of info on that and can share if you need it.
My 45-90 is a Miroku/Winchester 1886 TD with octagon 26 inch barrel- weighs 9.5 pounds unloaded. This is a flexible and powerful cartridge in a modern rifle and should be a good choice for a double.
I have considered reaming my Beretta 45-70 to 45-90, but am having too much fun shooting up the 100 rounds of loaded 300 grain ammo that came with it!

A little off topic but tomorrow I am picking up my Simson SxS 12 gauge shotgun which will become a slug gun for me. I will cut the chokes off and then check and see where the two barrels converge. Hopefully around 50 or 60 yards. I felt that only an old European or English double would do and the Simson was qute handsome for the price.

Is it 2 3/4 chambers? I have a JP Sauer from the 1930's that is 2 1/2". Beautiful little 12 gauge. I have another with side clips, but it is an East German made one that is 2 3/4"

It has 2 3/4” chambers, side clips and cross bolt actions.

I picked up the Simson today and although it was advertised as nice wood and clean bores, I was pleasantly surprised (actually ecstatic ) at the condition. Case hardening and bluing is close to 100%. Wood is excellent. Action (lock up) is extremely tight. It is almost “as new” tight. I believe the gun is a 1960s -1970s vintage. With a gun this nice, I decided to send the barrels to Michael Orlen in Massachusetts and have him cut the barrels to 25”, fill the end and add screw in chokes. I would like some simple express sights, but may opt for a fiber optic bead of some sort. He also installs those. When complete, I have a gun that I should be able to hunt hogs with at 50 yards or so and also hunt some birds. It will be lots of fun coming up with a slug that suits the gun…….I hope. Any suggestions on some low profile sights that can be dovetailed to the raised rib.

Very nice! A twin to my JP Sauer made in East Germany. Mine was made in 58, it says 458 which is kind of neat .

Sauer , Simson and Merkel all were made in the same factory in East Germany.

Do you have any cull hunts available? 7 days, daily rate plus per animal price?
