Another South African farmer has been reported killed after three gunmen attacked his homestead — part of a sustained campaign of violence across the country.
The alleged attack took place in Potchefstroom in the North West province, according to Times Live. The elderly victim was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from the private ambulance company ER24.

OFM, a radio station based in Central South Africa, put the farmer’s age at 69, and quoted police spokeswoman Pelonomi Makau as saying the killers were driven off by his son following a high-stakes altercation:

“They saw three suspects hiding at a fence who shot at the farm owner,” she said. “He died at the scene and the son managed to fight back the suspects. He managed to confiscate a firearm, knife and cell phone from the suspects. They then fled the scene.”

The killing is just the latest in a series of murders which the government has been accused of encouraging, and which have made farming in South Africa the most deadly occupation in the world.

South African farm killings — where victims are typically members of the country’s white, Afrikaans-speaking minority — are often extremely brutal in nature, involving prolonged periods of torture.

While they are little-reported even within South Africa itself — the government directed police to stop releasing information about victims’ ethnicity in 2007 — one recent murder which made headlines was that of 64-year-old former pharmaceutical executive Sue Howarth, who was a British national.

Mrs Howarth and her husband, 66-year-old Robert Lynn, were confronted by a group of masked men at their isolated farm in the small town of Dullstroom, where they had lived for twenty years, in February this year.

The men tied up the elderly couple and tortured them with a blowtorch for several hours, with Mrs Howarth suffering “horrific” burns to her breasts.

Her attackers attempted to kill her by stuffing a plastic bag down her throat, before driving her and Mr Lynn to a roadside ditch where they shot her twice in the head and her husband once in the neck.

Miraculously, Mr Lynn survived, and was eventually able to flag down a passing car for assistance. Mrs Howarth was also still alive, somehow managing to breathe despite the bag in her throat, but died in hospital two days later.

Brutality of this sort is far from unique, with civil rights group AfriForum writing that “the horror experienced during farm tortures is almost incomprehensible” in 2014.

Farm attacks and farm murders in South Africa: Statistics point to drastic increase in farm murders

While official statistics on farm attacks do not exist, the Transvaal Agricultural Union (TAU) estimates there were some 345 attacks resulting in 70 deaths in 2016.

All told, 1,187 farmers, 490 family members, 147 farm employees, and 24 farm visitors are known to have been murdered between 1998 and the end of 2016 — although the true figure is estimated at between 3,000 and 4,000.

“The average murder ratio per 100,000 for the population in the world is nine, I believe,” said TAU spokesman Henk van de Graaf in 2016.

“In South Africa, it is 54. But for the farming community it is 138, which is the highest for any occupation in the world.”

White South Africans fear the killings have the tacit support of the ruling African National Congress, with President Jacob Zuma defending the singing of the revolutionary song ‘Kill the Farmer, Kill the Boer’, and one his MPs crying out “Bury them alive!” during a recent parliamentary debate.

President Zuma called for South Africa’s constitution to be amended so farmland can be seized without compensation in March this year, possibly in response to former African National Congress youth leader Julius Malema founding a surging new political party with the rallying cry: “People of South Africa, where you see a beautiful land, take it, it belongs to you!”

Neighbouring Zimbabwe witnessed a similar situation in the 2000s when Marxist dictator Robert Mugabe instituted a programme of mass land confiscation. Many were murdered as squatters seized white-owned farms and ran them into the ground, ultimately leading to a collapse in agricultural production and economic depression.

The country’s 93-year-old tyrant swore the killers would never be prosecuted in August this year, effectively giving them an the state’s official seal of approval.

“Yes, we have those who were killed when they resisted. We will never prosecute those who killed them. I ask, why should we arrest them?” he demanded.

Thought South Africa was the one stable country in Africa.....seriously making decision to book a 2018 hunt there or in Namibia......seems like both are having problems. Does most trip insurance cover political problems?

This is nauseating! Promising something for nothing. Just like Zimbabwe. No one will know what to do with the land if they get it without earning it.

Sounds a lot like what the US welfare system has turned into. Far from the original intent of mearly a temporary life rope.

Thanks for sharing @Wheels
What a sad situation.

As a tourist hunter you have zero to worry about. A farmer at an isolated farm is another matter

The South African situation is so sad ... especially because it is not reported on.
There is no comparison between SA and Namibia.

Dead wrong! I hunted here 2 weeks after this occurred. Yes, I would hunt here again, But I would not stay a hotel outside the JNB airport again.

Manager Marie Steyn of the Kalahari Rangers Lodge in Kuruman near McCarthy’s Rest border was attacked by five black gunmen.

Police Spokesperson Sergio Kock said that five armed men entered the lodge around 00:30 on Sunday morning and pointed a gun at lodge manager Marie Steyn. The perpetrators forced her to open up the safe. The men fled with an undisclosed amount of money, a hunting rifle, a mobile phone, and a white Ford Ranger after tying up the 47-year-old woman onto a chair.

Steyn managed to untie herself and fled in a vehicle to get help. She drove through wire until she joined the highway. About 3 Km away from the Johan Olivier’s farm the vehicle broke down. Steyn proceeded on foot to get help.
Steyn said the men all wore balaclavas.

The vehicle in which the five men escaped was found on Wednesday afternoon, near Kuruman and the police are investigating a charge of severe armed robbery. Anyone with information about the suspects can contact Ao. Kobus Bothma on number 082-454-3899.

Sounds like history repeating similar to MauMau of early 1950's in Kenya...gruesome time.. butchers

Barbaric to say the least.

We are going back next May but 'No' overnight in Jo berg..Change to a Namibian airplane after a short layover in the airport....or go through Germany direct to Windhoek..Waiting to hear now..I have read a lot about "do not go out of the airport" .

I think Namibia is fairly safe in comparison but even they won't travel too far after dark I was told...Africa is still tribal and different ones try not to interact too much (marry)etc...Main thing is not go alone out of secure areas..

Windoek not exactly safe either.

Windhoek-The Ministry of Environment and Tourism is concerned over the growing frequency of attacks on tourists visiting Namibia. The ministry’s spokesperson Romeo Muyunda said they have noted at least two attacks on tourists in a space of two weeks, with the most recent attack reported on the Western Bypass in Windhoek last week.

A family of four German tourists survived an attempted hijacking and robbery on the Western Bypass around 13:30 last Thursday.

Namibia has always been regarded as a safe travel destination with peaceful people, a reputation that has contributed to the growth of tourism in the country, Muyunda said.

“With the current trend where tourists are being attacked, we are called upon to take collective measures, as individuals and institutions to restore our status of a peaceful environment,” he said.

It has been reported that the tourists had just landed in Namibia and en route to Etosha National Park in their rented double-cab bakkie.

The Namibian Sun reported that on the Western Bypass, just across from Paaltjies, a silver Polo which was following them, indicated there was something wrong with the vehicle. The unsuspecting tourists stopped and were attacked by three assailants.

It has further been reported that the criminals assaulted the father and demanded money from him.
The driver of a bus travelling behind the Polo noticed the commotion and stopped to help the tourists. The driver of the bus was armed and fired two warning shots in the air.

Two of the three robbers fled in the vehicle leaving one behind and was held at gunpoint by the bus driver until the police arrived.

Tourists passing through and visiting Namibia are easily recognisable because they would be taking pictures of monuments and they would be carrying backpacks.

The ministry condemned these destructive actions by some members of society.
Muyunda further discouraged those elements that tarnish the image of the country and or seek to jeopardise efforts to grow tourism potential to its maximum.

These actions, he said have far-reaching consequences to the tourism sector and Namibia as a destination.
“Violence is not an experience we want to create for our tourists but on the contrary, we want them experience the peacefulness that we have always offered over the years,” he noted.

The ministry called upon the law enforcement agencies and the Namibian citizens, to be vigilant and act proactively against these acts.

The ministry commended those that apprehend one of the suspects and called upon the Namibian Police Force to ensure that those that escaped are arrested without delay.

“We also call upon the judiciary to show no mercy on these suspects, as a way of discouraging this disturbing trend in our country. Tourism is a people-driven and people-centred industry and one thing is for sure that we cannot achieve our desired results if we pull in different directions. The significance of tourism to our country cannot be overemphasized. The sector is an important contributor to the generation of foreign exchange earnings, investments, revenue, employment creation, rural development, poverty reduction and ultimately to the growth of the country’s economy ,” he stated.

Only way to stop attacks on tourists is a mandatory death penalty with no appeals.

Maybe the airport is cleaning up its act.

Police have made a major breakthrough in what has been dubbed the "airport-following" robberies‚ committed in and around the Johannesburg area‚ arresting six suspects on Friday night.

A police manhunt has been launched for a seventh suspect who managed to escape evade arrest. Police spokesman Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said that acting on information‚ members of police based at OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) and the Johannesburg East Cluster‚ had monitored a security vehicle and discovered that the vehicle‚ which is contracted to work at the airport‚ was following a sedan from ORTIA travelling towards Sandton.

“The security vehicle was stopped and it was discovered that one of the occupants was a security company manager who is wanted for a case of possession of unlicensed firearm and an armed robbery case in the Limpopo province. The security company manager as well as a second occupant in the security vehicle were immediately arrested.

“The team worked throughout the night and during early hours of this morning arrested a further four suspects in the Hillbrow area. All six suspects are between 23 and 38 years of age. A seventh suspect managed to escape and he is still at large but being sought by the police‚” Naidoo said.

Several incriminating items‚ including the security vehicle‚ a sedan‚ passports‚ at least 15 cellular phones and several luggage bags had been recovered in Hillbrow‚ he said.

The team also recovered two pistols which would be sent for ballistic testing to establish which crimes‚ if any‚ they might have been used in.

“The team is also investigating the possibility that these may have been the same suspects that are responsible for the robbery of seven foreign visitors at Corlett Drive this past Thursday night.”

A group of seven tourists‚ including an Iraqi diplomat‚ were attacked at the Corlett Drive offramp in Johannesburg on Thursday evening.

The Deputy National Commissioner responsible for Policing‚ Lieutenant-General Fanie Masemola‚ lauded the police members for a job well done.

"The sterling work by these teams has brought us a step closer to cracking these incidents of "airport-following" robberies and they must be commended‚" said Masemola.

"However‚ our job does not end here‚ we will still have a lot to do solve the many robberies that were committed and to prevent new ones from taking place and we won't rest until we reach a positive outcome‚" Masemola added.

One can stay relatively safely at the Citi Lodge, across the street from the airport. As far as the B&Bs usually used by hunters, my PH told me the armed security services are a joke and after reading of the African Sky debacle, I believe him.
