The double has arrived

Congratulations on the arrival of your new rifle Kevin! Now go christen it in the Valley. An old warrior Buffalo or Elephant. Then post the pictures. Can’t wait! Cheers!

How wonderful!! Congratulations on such a beautiful double!! What a nice piece of wood!!

At long last my 450/400 3" double is here! I am over joyed, this is a pivotal moment, something I am sure the other double owners on AH experienced too. It was all rather plain sailing, the customs couldn't have been more helpful.
Just in time for the upcomming hunt on the 24th and hopefully it will take it's first buff.
thanks to all of you for your interest and enthusiasm along the way.
Hello Kevin,

So happy for you to finally get your new Heym Double Rifle that you have waited so long for. The only thing better than placing a order for a fine rifle is actually taking delivery!!!!
You should be very proud of your newest acquisition, a very fine looking rifle for sure, great lines and super wood as well, congratulations. I know the waiting is the hardest part after the order is placed but it is worth the wait for the superb quality you have there.
I took a look at the Case you chose to go with that beauty. Really nice, interior fitted like a English case would be but with the strength of a aluminum shell, really neat thing. It should keep your treasure well protected under the harshest of environments.
I also want to wish you the safest of travels on your upcoming adventure and may Diana smile upon you with good hunting and may your aim be true.

All the Best
JP

Thank you JP, we will be on our way to the hunting grounds this time next week.

Here is the 89b with a Kahles red dot. A bit higher than I would have liked, but that is the base I could get. Has anyone got suggestions for a lower mount?

Does it offer much advantage over the iron sights? It seems like your face will be off the stock to use it. I know the 450-400 is not a brute, but that could still be uncomfortable.

That’s indeed awfully high Kevin, it was your only option?
The Kahles base needs an adapter plate to fit to the Dokter base, but that only adds 1.8mm or so. The problem is the base from Dokter to 11mm dovetails. I searched the internet and this was the only one available.
When I mount the rifle with a decent cheek weld the red dot is towards the bottom of the Kahles screen, but I can still take a bead easily. With a loose cheek weld it is about a third up. I will be on the range tomorrow and see how this all works out.

Congratulations it is a fine looking rifle.

Very happy for you Kevin! Love the strong grain in the wood! I know it will shoot as good as it looks. Enjoy, and good safe hunting with it!

I really wonder how difficult it would be for Heym to mill a 3mm deep and about 10cm long piece from the quarter rib. And then create two pieces to fill this slot back up, only one with a Doctor footprint (or whatever the customer wants) to immediately bolt the red dot onto the quarter rib trough this 3mm high piece, and a second such piece that would just fill it up if you want to go irons only.

I'm quite sure there really is no need for any kind of quick detach or so for a red dot, because they are relatively as sturdy as the iron sights (something that can destroy a quality red dot, will probably take out a front or rear iron sight as well, or at least whack it out of alignment). And most people would just keep the red dot permanently on I assume.

I am sure it wouldn't be difficult to come up with something V, but I suppose we need to remember that the 89b is meant to have classic British styling with no detractions. The original Dokter sight and it's base does indeed mount lower. I tried to buy that base but they say it is discontinued?

Congrats Kevin,

I know you’ve been awaiting this moment. It’s a beauty!

Thank you, it isn't too fancy, but I really like the quality that comes through.

My friend and I fired 20 rounds at the range today, Hornady DGX factory loads, the older unbonded ones, all 400 grain. The chrono gave 2130fps. We shot 50 metres and using the open sights was relatively easy on a 50mm black patch bulls eye on a cardboard background. Regulation was good, left and right about 25mm apart and then 30mm apart on the re-run. All hits were about 15mm above the top of the bull, which I put down to taking too much bead? The felt recoil is a fairly stout shove as others have said, not as sharp as the Ruger No1 375 H&H.
I also tried a few shots with the Kahles red dot fitted. It is far easier to aim, but the base mount I have isn't correct and it moved, spoiling accuracy. Will try to get the proper mount.

Congratulations on a great looking rifle. I do like the wood. Do as you are going to do and put it to good use.

Re the red dot, I swear by Aimpoint though I do not know if they make a mount to sit on the rib of your double. If some on the forum can not get the base you need (in my opinion that base is way to high to use on a DG hunt as you may well burn time remembering to use a head high mount when really needed) is there any machine shop locally that could make something to suite. An expensive option I know.

Just my thoughts for what they are worth....................certainly not as much as getting a mount made up :)
