US Hunters purchasing ammunition in South Africa while on Safari

Shootist43 asked me to find out about the procedures and documents required when a US hunter wants to purchase ammo in SA while on Safari.
I have asked a couple of Weapons and ammo dealers as well as a local Outfitter what the requirements and procedures are.
1. You will need to produce your passport
2. You will have to produce your weapon temporary import permit
3. An invitation letter from the Outfitter - not sure if this is a legal requirement.

From what I understand is that you will be allow to purchase ammo, and it will be recorded as per normal SA laws. However you will not be allowed to export the ammo.

Morning Andre, he can bring his passport and temporary import permit. We will then be able to sell and record in the blue register. If you send me his detail, I can also tell the relevant safe manager at the store to be ready for his visit and make sure we have what he is looking for.

I've been to the Safari & Outdoor store in JoBurg twice, once during each of my safaris. They have an extensive selection of ammo. Check out their availability online prior to leaving the States. It is always good to have "Plan B" in your pocket for when "Murphy" shows up.

Safari and Outdoor has large shops in Jo'burg, East Rand and Pretoria. All easy accessible from the main highways to North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces from OR Tambo in Jo'burg. So an easy stop on the way top your hunting destination, should you require to purchase ammo.

As long as you are hunting in those areas and have a means or way to get to them.

I hunted out of Port Elizabeth and while there may of been a shop where I could of perhaps purchased ammo I just made sure that I had what I needed. I also planned to use the outfitters rifles and ammo if by chance mine hadn't shown up.

D. The temporary import permit serves as your firearm license in South Africa.

It enables you to buy ammunition in South Africa for the calibers noted on the permit.

E. You must have the temporary import permit on your person at all times while you are in possession of your firearms.

All the more reason to use a common African caliber. My thought would be to use the outfitter's ammo, most will sell to you if they have the caliber. I had to use my outfitter's rifle and ammo the day we hunted kudu. It was an area where they breed and raise buf and didn't want the gunshots to scare them. It was a suppressed 243 Win with 95g Berger VLD. I was very doubtful but it worked. One shot at 180 yards.

Berger? VLDs? In Africa? Used by an outfitter? In a .243? On kudu? What's the hunting world coming to?

I just sent and received a message from Preemesh Doolabh Bulawayo, licensed firearms dealer concerning purchase of ammunition by a foreign hunter. It is illegal to sell ammunition to a foreign hunter under any condition.

Is there any reason why the hunters PH could not buy the ammo? Are they limited to amount or calibers that they can purchase? I know there is some restrictions on ownership of guns, but not sure about ammo.

In South Africa residents including PH(s) and Outfitters can only purchase ammunition for firearms they are licensed to possess. Hopefully folks that live in other African countries will add their respective country's policy on ammo purchases for foreigners as well as residents.

This issue is pretty far down my concerns list when traveling to South Africa - particularly if carrying a common caliber. My checked bag once decided to layover in Johannesburg for a few days on the way to Mozambique. I borrowed a handful of .375 rounds, and had they not been available, would have used one of my outfitter’s rifles. Clean underwear, on the other hand, was a real challenge.

Try finding anything in any caliber anywhere East of Cairo. Gun shops in the Pamirs or anywhere east of the Urals are pretty rare indeed

I would have liked to take my own rifles to Africa, but decided to use the ph,s and skip any problems that could have came up in transit(loss-damage-laws), I used his .375H&H-7mm mag-.243 and killed what I hunted on six hunting trips. we in the USA don,t know how good we have it as we can go to a local gunshop and buy what ammo-reloading supplies and firearms(federal form& nic,s check for firearms 20 minutes) we want and walk out with it. in pa. you can buy-sell person to person with out any paper(if you want) as long as both parties are not prohibed from owning a firearm. I own many firearms pistols-revolvers-shotguns-rifles-black powder arms and load for 95 precent of them. and have a 1000 yard range 4.5 miles from my house and am a life member there.

I probably did not make myself clear in a previous post I was referring to Zimbabwe Firearms/Ammunition laws only. It is also illegal to leave your leftover ammo behind, (but it sure is appreciated).

Is there a relationship between clean underwear and DG hunts vs PG hunts? Should 2X or 3X reserve clean underwear be packed for a DG hunting trip vs a PG hunting trip?
