At least in SA, here are the requirements of USFW before allowing into the US. I saw this in some paperwork I was going through today from 2015.

Quite interesting... As I sit here hoping mine make it this way before Christmas
 
I guess that explains in part why it seems to take so long - they are required to keep them for at least two months, and spend 28 days in a salt solution!
