My Favorite Actor & His Rifle

Don’t know if it’s tue or not but I always heard that John Wayne told Bruce Dern that America was going to hate him for killing him off at the end of “The Cowboys”
Bruce Dern said he had a tough time getting an acting job after killing Wayne in that movie

Thanks for the write up, great memories! We were required to watch “The Sands of Iwo Jima” in Marine boot camp and the Sgt Major of my unit had a framed picture of John Wayne in his office. Although he never served in the military, he represented what was great about America. I loved all of his movies. You would not like his 1972 movie, “The Cowboys,” where Bruce Dern shoots John Wayne in the back, killing him. Hated that scene.
@BJH65 - his later movie “The Cowboys” was one of his two best movies of the 1970s —— the other was “The Shootist” 1976 (his last movie). I read an article where Bruce Dern said (after taking the part in “The Cowboys”) that John Wayne told him “you’re gonna be the most hate guy in the World after you shoot me”.
Bruce Dern was also damn good in that movie.

@Rob404 - you’re right, and I should’ve read your post before I basically copied it….

Gary Cooper owned a number of Juenke Saturn rifles back when the Saturn workshop was in Santa Monica, of all places.

Who isn’t a Duke fan? My JW buckle.

Howard Hawks has a handful made after they made Red River. He gave John one with his initials in the corner. John would not wear it with his own initials. So John and Howard traded buckles. John wore one like mine with Howard Hawks initials and Howard wore John’s buckle

If you look you will see the Duke wore this buckle in I think 7 more movies after Red River.

@Altitude sickness - that belt buckle is a real “Treasure” — where did you ever get it? Is it one of the original 7 made or a replica? Regardless its Great !

Speaking of the Cowboys movie I’ve met Clay O’Brien Copper at a Team Roping event. He and Jake Barnes were world champs for years.
@Altitude sickness - since your are a John Wayne fan, do you know which one of his frequent co stars was also a real Cowboy and Rodeo World Champion roper? (No google look up).

@analog_peninsula: Gary Cooper was also a avid skeet shooter and one of the better horseback riders in Hollywood - although almost all actors and actresses could ride a horse in the 1930s-1950s….it was common for social recreation too and Hepburn, Stanwyck, Davis, Crawford could all ride “English”….Now they often use Computer generated images, want a laugh - watch current actors on a real horse “bouncing along” for the micro second they are filmed on a one.

A fun scene from the 1983 007 movie Octopussy has James Bond being hunted by the bad guy who is atop an elephant. Looks like the bad guy has a Weatherby Mark V with which he is about to scope himself.

John Wayne is the actor I love to love (grew up with his movies), while Weatherby is the brand I love to hate.

To me, that "California Look" with white spacers, squared-off forend, glossy finish, exaggerated Monte Carlo comb, and (horror of horrors) skip-line checkering is the firearm equivalent of this guy:

Add to this the Weatherby calibers, which go against my "heavy and slow(ish) win the race" philosophy, and a little part of me dies inside when I see The Duke fondling one of old Roy's creations. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Looks like Steve McQueen, a strange picture. Lever action rifle, looks like 45-70 ammo in the loops while working on an automobile wearing spurs.
It could be Ben Johnson ??
When ever he purchased ammo he always asked for 45-70 and could shoot half a dozen times with that mares leg.

The show was Wanted Dead or Alive

I didnt know either that Eastwood is anti hunter (if at all), but legacy of movie White Hunter - Black heart is generally negative for hunters.
Several times, I was told by acquaintances "white hunter - black heart!" when mentioning I was on safari. Knowing nothing about hunting in general, or safari, this is the first thing that comes to their mind. The movie has done its deed. Bad message.

He could make something like "the ghost and the darkness", or "mogambo" if he wanted to make a safari movie.
I didn't see that as a safari movie. I thought it was about a movie director who saw himself as a safari guy, but when put to the test, failed. And managed to get someone else killed in the process. There was a theme there, and the theme was not "hunting is bad".

Or, as another Clint Eastwood movie put it: "a man has got to know his limitations..."
