I agree.
Today, it is unsettling, just as hunting Rhinos, is becoming a major issue today.
Rhinos are now threatened, and with some species, nearing extinction. That changes perception.
Case in point…Baboons. Not great apes, but also primates. There is no stigma to hunting them, because they are abundant, and in some cases, an actual threat.

Well, even with rhinos, you can justify the killing of old bulls under conservation and stopping them from killing the other rhinos.
Great apes are very much more complicated than this as, to put it bluntly, they're basically people. Especially with their intelligence. It's why nowadays, the most heavily debated animals are them, elephants, and cetaceans.
I agree, but only up to a point. Many animals are ‘basically human’ in regards to intelligence, emotions, and self awareness.
There’s a lot of visual evidence to back up that statement, on Tik Tok, alone.
Great Apes appear human which adds to that equation, but I still don’t see the difference (in theory at least), between hunting an old Rhino bull, or a lone, adult, male Gorilla. If it’s part of a family unit, that’s another story.
To me, the horrors perpetrated by “legitimate” scientific and zoological organizations, was far worse. Hunting entire families of Gorillas & killing the adults…for the purpose of capturing the young, and enslaving them as curiosities, to be gaped at, by the public. Honestly, I can’t comprehend that level of evil. And yet, the individuals who perpetrated those atrocities, were celebrated by the public, and given awards by their peers.
