As a friend explained to me, "When the springbok "pronks", it bounces on all four legs and the dorsal "fan" flares out. At the moment of death, the fan remains flared and the "perfume" is emitted. After a few minutes, the muscles of the fan will relax and the hairs will resume its normal position." For me, its almost as if this beautiful creature is releasing its spirit. My friend (who is a cancer survivor) said that if he had to do the mounting of his springbok all over again, he would do "a full body mount with the fan flared". I have to agree.
