Nyala23,
I found this in an Alaskan gun shop over 20 years ago.
No name/brand on it:
This empty leather ammo carrier weighs only 1.5 oz.
Same weight as the new "Ghost Ring" Ruger peep from NECG: 1.5 oz.
Here is a home-made cowboy rig:
Velcro fastening is nice.
Beartooth makes a neoprene...
p.ham,
No doubt your 6.8 Western is a beauty and capable of bughole accuracy.
The cross-slots on your custom quarter rib make it even more capable,
what with all the Picatinny-rail-fitting stuff so prevalent nowadays.
The legs on the tall bipod for the .500 A-Square are retracted in above photos.
They extend to allow easy shooting from the sitting position.
I do not shoot it from prone,
nor do I have a tree at my back to steady me when I shoot it, heh-heh-heh.
But really it is quite gentle compared to a 12ga...
This rig handle anything sensible.
An old Four-Ring Circus Rig:
A Three-Ring Circus:
Or remove the peep and use a low-mounted scope of any reasonable power range,
or a red-dot sight, etc.
The favored hunting load of olde: Barnes 570-gr Smurf-X
Shotgun ammo carrier works well for .500...
High scope mounting allows peep to remain on rifle with scope,
and the Burris X-Tac high rings have a tunnel through them that aligns perfectly with peep.
Make lemonade from lemons.
A different gunsmith did this one in 1999. He sent his work to an engraver for marking, but I got hold of this one before he sent it off.
Years later I got my local Gunsmith to stamp it.
I asked him to get the "2" into exponential position.
That was not unintentional on this one:
So this one...
MauserDuff,
Last time I aired my laundry on the .475 Linebaugh Ruger No. 1,
I was told I needed a .500 Linebaugh Ruger No. 1 like was built by John Linebaugh as a companion for his faithful handgunner customers.
Heh-heh-heh.
I have already done too much with 50-bores to want any more of them...
The rifle is a Mighty Mite, 20" barrel, and close to 0.4"-long Slug Jump in the throat allows long COL loading, much like with the .458 WIN MAG.
400-grainers at 2000 fps.
500-grainers at 1700 fps.
Home made cast bullets of +500 grains (FN GC Hardcast PC-Painted) from a mould designed for the 470...
Perfect fitment until the quarter rib loosened and a recoil tab on the bottom of the Warne QD lever ring at the front broke off.
This one had only 4 screws holding it, not the usual solid steel studs and screws:
Quickly back in action with OEM Ruger rings. The Alaska Arms LLC QD-Lever...
cash_tx,
That is a beauty.
Looks to me like both butt and forearm are custom.
Wood matches.
Ebony on tip of a rather full forearm and cheekpiece on butt are custom IMHO.
Butt I am still learning.
Perfect-for-the-rifle, life-time-warranteed, Leupold 1.5-5x20mm included for that price is nice...
Definitely stronger than the original, through-the-walnut-hole, OEM attachment.
The scope and rings combo above weighs 1 # 3 oz.
J-B Weld your quarter rib to barrel if you want to use a scope on your .458 WIN MAG/.458 WIN MAGA.
I learned this from a .475 Linebaugh Ruger No. 1-S that...
Above is the forearm hanger screw that actually can become stripped and bent with so powerful a cartridge as the .458 WIN MAG loaded long (.458 WIN MAGA) to beat a SAAMI .458 Lott.
Walnut buttstocks not properly glass-bedded may crack with such a powerful rifle.
I elected to re-stock my .458 WIN...
