It would be awesome to take a special rifle on a special hunt, for that I am 1000% behind the idea.
Just dont fall into the trap of shooting high BC target bullets at game. No matter how accurate they are.
Also dont take stupid long shots just because you think the rifle deserves them.
Good...
This was one of those Savages 340's with the split rear breech.
Rough little thing, near Thabazimbi the bush is so thick you are shooting through holes at 50m.
A 150gr .30 cal bullet starting at 2400fps works wonders.
I dont know if I mentioned it but the owner of one of the farm I hunt on has this wierd old bolt action 30-30 that he uses for camp meat.
Mostly wildebeest.
50-70m in the thick stuff, it works.
Why would a lever gun not do the same.
My opinions,
You get two types of PH , I think the one post above kinda shows this.
Newbie starting out or DG part timer vs the old hand that might be a land owner or is well off due to a successful long standing operation focussing on DG.
For the newbies, cost a major factor.
1. A factory...
.30-06 is like a boiled chicken breast.
It will feed you but has no flavour or appeal.
Get a 300 H&H that is basically a 30-06 ++ and do everything with it.
But its spicey and delicious.
I shoot all of that with 156gr bullet out of a 6.5x55 so would have little issue with a 150gr out of a 7mm-08.
You will probably shoot it better too, go for it.
I love the BHP.
My war gun would be a Hi-Power with a few 15 round mags.
But I started getting guns in the 90's, so I am sold of the .40.
A caliber people hate, but my go to for serious defence is a Glock 23 backed up by a 27.
I dont think I hate any pistol calibers.
This boils down to where I started hunting and my observations in the field.
1. .270 - guys taking this into the bushveld messed this up for me.
2. Anything Weatherby apart from the 300.
3. 6.5 Creedmoor with target bullets. Berger, ELD-X, "ballistic tip" please leave this on the range.
