Indulge me...Ruger no 1 thoughts.

The model 10s are very nice rifles, but expensive and lack an ejector. I admire them, but don't think I will ever own one. I have two Ruger No. 1s.

I know nothing of large bore rifles in the number 1 Rugers. I love the #1s having five of them: 220 swift, 270 win, 30-06, 9.3x74r, and a 375H&H. I also own a couple Browning high walls. The #1s is superior in my opinion. I am hooked.

I don’t know much about No1’s but I do know to stay away from anything that starts with a 4. Even my “heavy D barrel” 450/400 is 100% unpleasant to shoot.

@Bandera

@Bandera, first let me say how impressed I am that you face the world so bravely with your disability. You're so honest and forthright about it that I think you will help others as well. I know your fight probably feels hopeless and that the world isn't made for people like you so afflicted, but here you are, shouting for all to hear, "I AM LEFT-HANDED!!!".
I just look at it this way, I am in my right mind, most of the rest of the world is nuts.

well being left handed means i,m half right. however my wife said i,m in no way close to half right.

My next dream project is to rebarrel/ rebore to a 26inch barrel in 450/400 NE
(a Ruger No. 1 .220 Swift may be a good donor), weighted and balanced at the hinge pin, to 9.5 pounds, tungsten shot strategically JB Welded in the forearm and buttstock. An XS ghost ring rear peep, and a NECG banded front with green fiber optic front, barrel band swivel.

Just dreaming.

I just simply love Ruger No 1's. I bought my first #1 many moons ago as a 300 Win Mag barreled action and it sat in that state for years because I simple didn't have the $$$'s to finish it. As time went on my financial situation improved to the point that I could go a little crazy. The result was what you see here; a very expensive hunk of wood "sculptured" to what I thought was cool at the time. It shoots like a dream but the only game that it has taken is a Mule Deer and a Moose, the damned thing is too pretty to do what it was built to do. So this one sits it out in the safe while my other #1 goes to Africa.

While I'm not saying shot out barrels don't exist, I've never seen one. I'd give it a 30 day speciality cleaning regimen, I'd get a forend tensioner inside the forestock, and if there is any throat erosion I'd ream the throat a bit longer. Shoot heavy for caliber bullets in it.

If you do the above, I would be astounded if it isn't 1 MOA or better. Most terribly inaccurate #1s are due to the forend harmonics but there is a simple device you can inlet into the forend to provide consistent tension and harmonics. It turns 3MOA dogs into .75 MOA wonders.

Obliged for the advice - however clearly you are an enabler - if it cleans up I am going to need another one - for the 333 Jeffery !

Great pics and a handsome rifle. Did you blink in that top pic? What is it you like so much about the No 1? It's certainly a tidy looking rifle, but what about shooting them is so fun?
The sun was in my eyes, so I may be squinting. I'm right handed but left eye dominate, so I've been hunting with a #1 for the last 35 years. I love how short and handy the #1s are, they are easy to carry in the field and work well in tree stands. The No. 1 I used on my buffalo weighs a trim 11-1/2 pounds and cloverleafs rounds at 100 yards. If has a mercury recoil reducer in the stock to soak up some of that recoil the 416 Rigby is know for. If I was looking to buy another big bore No. 1 I'd get a 450/400.

I just finished reading 43 fascinating pages of the love fest

and started adding my two cents there,

and now this one begins ...

Love those Ruger No. 1 rifles.

218bee-416RM and 5 in between all NO1

Never once felt handicapped while carrying one. All shoot well with a proper hand load. Very simple and with a little practice can operate as fast as most with a bolt gun.

Now all of you enablers have me craving a No. 1. Saw several on Gunbroker with Mannlicher stocks, any thoughts on one with that stock option? Seems like something really different than any of my other rifles

#1s are nice rifles and you can find some of them with exceptional quality wood grain. They are classy looking and designed after one of the best single shots ever made. Instead of going bigger, how about a 7x57? Get something you would hunt a lot of PG and deer with...get the nicest one you can find and put excellent glass on it. I did the same thing but with a Dakota 10 in 7x57. You won't regret having a fine rifle in a really practical hunting caliber. It will get a lot of use and create a lot of memories for you.

Im eyeballing a couple 7x57 No. 1s on Gunbroker right now. Thinking of pairing a nice #1 and a bolt gun in .416 rem mag (or Rigby) on my next safari.

Exactly what I did…Dakota in 416 Rigby and Dakota 10 in 7x57. Killer combo.

Mannlicher style full stocks have a horrible reputation for accuracy. It’s half-true. They have inherently bad 2nd-3rd-4th shot accuracy due to the stock keeping the entire bottom of the barrel hot, which causes expansion, which causes the guns to string bullets up-up-up with each additional shot.

For a hunter, the above is an irrelevant anecdote, the only question we care about is do they shoot beautifully for the first shot? Usually they do.

My RSI model is chambered in 275 Rigby and is the shortest, most compact rifle in my safe. Personally I love how slender the forearm is and how it fits in my hands. I hunt the vast majority of the time in dense woods where a shot of longer than 150 meters would be unusual. For my needs, this rifle is one of the best options I can choose with a 2-7x33 scope. The RSI model comes in 13 different chamberings (some of them much rarer than others) but I always wanted one in 257 Roberts, 6.5x55 or 7x57. I'm really glad I was able to find the one below from a limited run of 100.

@Bandera I will dedicate the Toby Keith classic "God is great, Beer is Good, and People are Krazy" to you.

I had always been in love with the Ruger No 1's since I got into rifles/hunting. The big-bores always interested me as well. Last year I found one in 458WM living at an FFL a couple miles as the crow flies from my house. I had to have it. It is the "Tropical" format with the heavy barrel.

It kicks. It's lively. You're probably every bit of 70-80 lbs recoil with the 458.

With a new 375HH bolt gun on the way for me, I am debating putting it up for sale. We shall see. The folks on here posting pics of buffalo taken with them makes me want to keep it. The real question, in a DG situation: How proficient and fast can you be with it to reload as a cape buffalo is charging towards you?

The only reason I don't have a Ruger No. 1 in .25-06 or .280 Remington is because I never ran across one during the 5 or 6 years that I was smitten with the idea. This was really before the pervasive Internet so finding a particular gun meant a lot of phone calls and stopping at every gun and pawn shop and I wasn't that in love.

I eventually fell out of love with the idea and moved on.

Looking back, the Ruger No. 1 is just a double rifle that ignores one of life's basic axioms..."ship happens"...
