What do I take to Namibia? 30-06

No, I’ve used them in .308 and faster .300 mag velocity loads with the 200gr version. I shot a deer at 310y last December with the .308 factory 175gr load out of an FN SPR with a 20” barrel. Buck was quartering towards me and I had a full pass-thru out the back rib. The exit wound was...

What do I take to Namibia? 30-06

Aoudad are tough animals with a will to live. They are a good test for an African load. I shot mountain zebra and gemsbok in Namibia with the 165 ttsx out of a loaner win mag and I’ll say this: they were absolutely effective and did the job, but I must admit I was underwhelmed at the 200yd +...

JES does quality work with a very reasonable cost and turn around. I’m about to ship him a barrel. I’d get him on the phone (which may take a few attempts) and tell him your plans. I bet he can do it with little fuss.

Model 70 Safari Express - Safety Issues?

I’ll play both sides of this one. The models made between 64-69 I believe had some safety issues from lube, etc drying inside etc and making the safeties hard to move, especially going from fire to the middle position. I have a 1970 express 375 sitting on my bench right now that I’m buying from...

Another good new powder to consider is 6.5 StaBall. It will give you good velocity with 235gr bullets and is very temp stable.

375 H&H load data using Superformance powder

This is true. Hodgdon superformance is very good for a handful of cartridges, like the WSMs. Its very effective in 6.5 creedmoor as well. However, it is not the same as any of the factory loaded superformance powders, even in the cartridges with burn rates the Hodgdon powder is designed for.

CEB reduced recoil loads for plains game

The ruger is about 8lbs total and has a 13” length of pull. Chuck Hawk has a recoil table that cites some loads for the RCM and they are about on par with .30-06 of the same rifle weight and grain, so the 130 should be a little less. I guess I’d need an approximate velocity to calculate the...

Yes she has. And more importantly those are the rifles she wants to use, which is how I arrived here. I’m not trying to discount anyones opinions, as they are valid and appreciated, just trying to get good info on CEB’s of lighter weight. Thanks for the responses. I’ll probably load up some 130...

CEB reduced recoil loads for plains game

I’ve heard the same thing, I figured 150 was already light but you may be on to something there. I’m planning to email them when I narrow things down, but I figured I’d see who has actually shot tough game with small CEB bullets first.

CEB reduced recoil loads for plains game

I was interested in the Maximus myself as it looks a lot more like the BCs I’m used to. I’m considering it in the .375 as well, but that’s a discussion for a different day. Thanks for the input, that helps ease my mind some.

CEB reduced recoil loads for plains game

I don’t need to go that soft. I should probably rephrase my question, as I was afraid the discussion would derail accordingly. I’m not looking for a light recoiling round, I’m just trying to ease up on one of the rifles she wants to shoot. She CAN shoot them both, but there is a price to pay at...

CEB reduced recoil loads for plains game

Ok brain trust, here it is. I need to come up with a load capable of effectively dispatching a zebra or gemsbok that my very petite wife can shoot. She is not recoil shy, but she gets nervous when shooting at live game and I want to minimize potential problems. I have two rifles I’m working...

    Rifle rich and pistol poor...

Don’t overcomplicate this one. Pick a pistol you like and shoot it and dry fire it A LOT. Pistols, for self defense, are mechanically more accurate than the shooter. I’ve trusted my life to Glock, H&K, FN, and M&P pistols and they all served me well. Find one that you like in your hands and that...

Wanting a high accuracy 308 bolt action rifle what to get?

I have spent many hours behind an FN SPR as a swat sniper, but I’d say that’s an unnecessary purchase. The draw to the FN is that they found a way to chrome line a match grade barrel, which came with a 10,000 round .5 MOA guarantee. They will do that, but they are stupid heavy and the factory...

Moving to Florida- which rifle(s) and caliber(s)?

i won’t wade into the caliber suggestions as you’ve been inundated with appropriate recommendations. 270 WSM or 7 Remington Magnum

It does not have a belt, but it feeds very poorly in most rifles, especially compared to the .300 and .325 wsm. That’s not necessarily a deal breaker, just another factor to consider.

    FN Mauser project

The .338 would fit better as the shoulder is in the same spot as the 7 mag. I have a .300 rcm ruger hawkeye that I love, and that’s plenty of .30 cal for me. I want a little more frontal area and knock down. I’ve shot kudu, zebra, 2 oryx, and a hartebeest with a .300 win. All shots were well...

    Survey: Your Favorite .30 Caliber

With no regard for the redundancy of practical answers, my personal favorite is the .300 Ruger compact magnum. I’m smitten with the rifle I have chambered in .300 rcm and the round has served me well, as any great .30 cal should.

What scope for 375 Model 70?

I told a friend the same thing and he has the exact scope on his m70 375. On 2x with the fire dot it’s a great close range gun. The extra magnification is nice too. I’ve taken kudu, zebra, gemsbok, and hartebeest with 6x and several of those shots left me wanting for more magnification (beyond 200).

    Bad weather rifle

    FN Mauser project

Interesting thought. I took some .300 rcm rounds and stacked them in the action to see how they would work, and the .375 Ruger case seems perfectly feasible. Given the .300 rcm is shorter, but it’s close enough as it’s just a shortened .375.

    FN Mauser project

I certainly wrestled with the thought of “corrupting” a classic rifle, but I think my plans will be a nice blend of classic FN with some modern finishes. As for the 7 mag- I have a model 70 in 7 mag that this one just won’t ever compete with. That made the decision much easier.

I’ve had this project in the back of my mind for a while now, so let me consult the fine brain-trust that is the AH forum.
