    New edition to the cabinet

@BeeMaa Thank you very much . Yes , the pictured rifle does appear to be a control round feed action . Although it escaped my mind , that it could also be a 1990s era Winchester Model 70 .

Some Bad Factory Safari Ammo - Conclusions Pending

@rookhawk This is extremely educational . I personally have great admiration for Federal’s Trophy Bonded 500 grain Bear Claw soft nosed factory loads in my .458 Winchester Magnum . I really used to admire their 500 grain Federal Trophy Bonded Sledgehammer Solid flat nosed bronze jacketed...

    Advise on semi auto shotgun

@mark-hunter You can always fire Brenekke or foster style slugs through the cylinder choke . The Browning A-5 High Grade Hunter is one of the finest ( and oldest ) semi automatic shotguns on the market .

Where are all the American double rifle makers

When I think of American double rifles , Butch Searcy & Co. is the first name which immediately comes to my mind . The gentleman is an absolute artist . I have had the good fortune to handle a side-lock ejector in .500 Nitro Express , which was built by this great man . Last time we spoke , he...

@Andrew Short Think of it as a blessing in disguise . Perhaps , you could find a lovely side-lock double rifle now .

Talk to me about the 450/400 NE double

Heartiest congratulations @Andrew Short The .450/400 Nitro Express used to be a standard calibre for hunting Royal Bengal tigers and Asian sloth bears during the British colonial era ( although it was too light for hunting Gaur ) . It shall also do incredibly well for African Cape buffalo ...

375 H&H/9.3x62 Buffalo and Plains Game Combo

Personally , I find bringing along a 9.3x62 mm Mauser to be quite redundant if the hunter is already bringing a .375 Holland & Holland Magnum . A .30-06 Springfield or a .300 Winchester Magnum would make for a far better secondary rifle . It would cover a wider range of bases .

    404 jeffery vs 416 Rigby

I personally prefer the .416 Rigby a little more than the .404 Jeffery ( although both calibres are excellent ) . The reason is a trivial one : A 410 grain .416 calibre bullet has slightly better sectional density than a 400 grain .423 calibre bullet .

Best Recoil Pad for .458 Lott

Good evening @Ed Lally , I have used countless Limb Saver recoil pads in rifles , over the years . They are among the best , especially for the .458 Winchester Magnum .

Winchester M70 .375 H&H New Haven vs. South Carolina

There is absolutely no question about this . Get the New Haven made Winchester Model 70 in .375 Holland & Holland Magnum .
  13. Professor Mawla

    Stay .375 or go to .416 ?

I concur with the general opinion which has been expressed by most of the gentlemen here . Keep it as it is ( .375 Ruger ) . Only switch to a .416 Ruger if you are seriously committed to hunting thick skinned dangerous game ( and that too , on multiple safari trips ) .

Please Recommend A 220 Grain .30-06 Springfield Factory Load

@Cervus elaphus , @Longwalker , @bruce moulds , @mark-hunter Gentlemen , thank you for all of your ( highly experienced and insightful ) advice . I would just like to let all of you know that the hunt is over (with incredibly positive results ) . In the end , I opted to go with @spike.t and...

    375 H&H Heavy Bullets vs 416

For the most part , Woodleigh’s 350 grain bullet for the .375 Holland & Holland Magnum should prove perfectly adequate against dangerous game . Were I going against elephants or Gaur , then I should think that the 450 grain Norma full metal jacket factory load for the .416 Rigby would be...

    Recoil: 404 Jeffery vs. 375 H&H and 416 Rigby

I have shot both a .375 Holland & Holland Magnum and a .416 Remington Magnum . I have personally found neither to be significantly different in recoil from one another ( although the .416 Remington Magnum naturally does recoil slightly more , but not uncomfortably so ) . I believe that rifle...

    338s Are A Great Caliber

@Witold Krzyżanowski I 100 % agree with you . The .338 Winchester Magnum is a favorite calibre of mine , especially when employing the 250 grain Nosler Partition soft nosed factory load .

300 yard eland shoulder shot with a .308 - would you take it?

I personally would not attempt to hunt an eland with a calibre as small as the .308 Winchester . My preferences would be : - .318 Westley Richards ( 250 grain Kynoch soft nose ) - .338 Winchester Magnum ( 250 grain Nosler Partition ) - 9.3x62 mm Mauser ( 286 grain Nosler Partition ) The elands...

    Light weight plains games rifles

Good evening @The_red_Boe For a light rifle , might I suggest a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in the .300 Winchester Magnum ? Excellent American made rifles , which are built like tanks . Extremely robust and rather affordable , too .

    .450 Rigby whats your opinion

@NewForester I believe that I know the answer to this question for you . You see , there are a large number of hunters who are traditionalists and who prefer older calibres ( namely the ones which were used during the golden age of safari hunting such as the .404 Jeffery or the .470 Nitro...

    .404 Jeffery build

Exceptional choice . Granite Mountain Arms manufactures great Magnum Mauser actions . Built like tanks . In a Las Vegas gun show a few years ago , I had the good fortune to see a . 505 Gibbs built on one such action .

    450 Rigby vs 416 Rigby

If one is planning on hunting a great deal of thick skinned dangerous game ( such as elephants , Cape buffaloes and hippopotamuses ) in dense foliage , then I would highly recommend the .450 Rigby . This applies even more so , for professional hunters or Problem Animal Control officers . Of...

    .416 400gr dgx bonded experiences?

I have trialled the 500 grain Hornady DGX Bonded soft nosed factory loads in my .458 Winchester Magnum , and I found absolutely no reason to complain about it’s performance . It is light years ahead ( in terms of ballistic performance ) of the old cup & core style Hornady DGX . It mushroomed...

    .500 Jeffery whats your opinion

This is a very lovely calibre . Superior Ammunition loads their custom ammunition with 600 grain Woodleigh bullets , for the .500 Jeffery . While I personally like the .505 Gibbs ( due to the lack of the rebated rim , slightly better sectional density and the slightly larger but irrelevant...

    .450 Rigby whats your opinion

This is an excellent calibre . I personally consider all of the .450 bores to be the perfect all rounders for hunting dangerous game , under any and all circumstances . And the .450 Rigby is among the best in this class . It is equal in performance to the .450 Dakota , but with the relatively...

Big Bore for Buffalo-Double or Bolt

Good evening @uplander01 As a general rule , I would recommend bolt action rifles . That is what I personally prefer . But this applies even more so , for a novice client hunter . 270 winchester bullet performance question 150 partitions and A frames

I am partial to the 150 grain Nosler Partition for the .270 Winchester . I have personally hunted several whitetail deer and mule deer with this combination . Why no lever-action rifle for Elephants?

    Double Rifle Movie India

@Major Khan Sir and Kawshik Rahman actually introduced me to this film . It is quite the cinematic masterpiece . Stewart Granger used a .500/465 Nitro Express ( built by James Purdey ) in the film . The character , Desmond uses another double rifle - a .375 Holland & Holland Flanged Magnum ...

First Dangerous Game Rifle - Struggling to decide

Last time I checked , I am not the one who goes out of his way to belittle a rifle calibre and make it look inherently useless . This is indeed extremely fortunate . I have hunted an American Kodiak bear with a Dakota Model 76 ( a .416 Remington Magnum ) . They truly were magnificent pieces of American workmanship .
