Yes Sir, I agree. Powder prices have almost doubled and sure enough primer prices have gone WAY up! Point being if a person is willing to look close there are better prices out there than what you'll find on GB. Not easy but they are out there. I shoot year round. Not 10 or 12 rounds a year then...
Realistic? When I've just bought 1000 magnum LR primers for $160.00? At $45 a hundred that's robbery! And yes I'll complain about people like that because they are crooks taking advantage of a poor situation. Not stopping you from paying $45 a hundred. Have at it friend.
Channelcat, I usually list the firearm, scope and sometimes binos on the same form. Take the items to customs (in hardcase) and have never had a problem getting the form signed off. I make copies to place in each bag and keep the original in my passport wallet.
Never met the man but know folks who did. Capstick had a writing style that made you feel like you were there hunting with him.. The man knew how to tell a story. Frankly there was a bit of jealousy involved with some of the local hunting outfits that an upstart american coming in as a licensed...
Good day sir. All valid points you bring up with the Nosler FP solids. But,... they do have a bore riding nose. The ones I have for my 9.3X62 give outstanding accuracy, shoot to the same point of impact as the Swift A-Frame (286grn) with my handloads with no pressure signs. Bolt lift and...
Mdwest that's a great load you have there. I achieved max performance with the 225grn TSX using Varget and W748. Chronographed at 2530fps. As the TSX is much longer, powder compression was sever. That said I had no pressure signs and bolt lift and extraction was 1 finger easy. I've since...
Bush Buck, welcome to the following. The 9.3X62 has become my favorite medium bore. I primarily load and shoot either 250grn or 286grn Swift A-Frames. Sometimes Norma Oryx in 286grn. With various powders all have given superb accuracy and better than factory velocities. Everything shoots into...
Yes indeed! My ex wife. She's the reason I keep a bottle of holy water, a wreath of garlic, a wooden stake and a mallet next to the front door in case she ever shows up. The only undead I worry about.
Well glad to hear that but I was going by what Customs in Joberg told my group when we went through there on a previous trip. I can assure you I'm not in the habit of giving disinformation. As the rules are constantly changing in SA this can happen. Sorry you take exception to my post.
Mdwest you're on the right track! Loads with the 225grn Barnes are possible at 2500fps. Using Varget or W-748. You'll have to use a drop tube and they will compress the powder a lot. Never had pressure problems though. That Barnes TSX is long for it's weight and is why I've since gone to the...
Funny you should mention that Bob. The geometry of a stock has a lot to do with felt recoil. The stock on my Steyr Scout in 308 feels like I'm shooting a 243. I've shot some rifles that are soft recoiling cartridges but because of the stock made your eyes water.
With my 9.3 weighing about 1 3/4lbs less than my 375, 286grn pill vs 300grn within 100fps of each other, the 9.3 still has slightly less recoil to me. Both are comfortable to shoot. Understand though felt recoil is very subjective to the individual. What is comfortable to some may loosen the...
I would recommend the 225grn Swift A-Frame. At 2530fps using W748 it will handle everything up to Eland. I had excellent results when I used my 358 in Namibia.
Sadly can't do it. just got my money together for my May hunt and the transmission in my truck committed suicide. $4200 to get it back on the road. when it rains it pours eh?
Yes sir the 99's are fine rifles. I picked up an early model with the rotary magazine in .284 Winchester. Great rifle. Would love to come across one in 358 Win.
You know I really hate spell check. Should have looked closer before posting my reply as now it looks like I can't spell worth a hoot. Momma always said I wasn't the brightest bulb in the box!!
Idmay, welcome to the 358 club. Taco Kelly has a great article on the 358 Win on his website Leverguns.com. I've found H-335 works magic with 180-200grn bullets. Target and W-748 is best with 225-250grn bullets. Granted some of Pace's loads seem way over the top but,... factory loads were held...
I just want to take a moment to thank all of you who responded to my my tribute to Howard. I'm normally a private person but had to share this. I know some of you personally and others by following your posts. But above all else I knew that this group of like minded folks and...
Yes sir, Howard lived life to its fullest. The tales he would tell of hunting in far off places were the stuff of dreams. With Howard it was never about the trophies or making the kill. It was all about the experience being there, Those are ideals to live by in my book.
Sorry to hear that Ragman. And yes sir it is hard when it's someone close. But look at it this way, you have the memories and those are priceless. Thanks for sharing.
when you get to the ripe old years and long in the tooth, people and friends you know start passing along the way. Life is the one thing no one gets out of alive. But sure enough I'll live each day for what it has to offer.
I'm not often moved to write about something like this, but in this case I feel moved to do so. This is about a a friend and a hunter who will be missed. I first met Howard years ago while I was working at a prominent gun shop in Baton Rouge, La. With my military, law enforcement and having...
Bob I never for a moment thought you'd turn your back on the 35,LOL. You are the champion of the Whelen and rightly so. Here in the States 35 caliber bullets are hard to come by.
Sorry but I have to disagree. Currently no one is chambering the 35 Whelen in a factory rifle. Custom build? Yes. As far as 35 caliber bullets? right now they are as scares as teeth in a chickens head. 9.3 in various weights are available from numerous sources. Bob Nelson will sing the praises...
Zim, no I don't have data for them but they gave you good info. Compared to other bullets they may seem soft but they hold together from what I've been told. Seems to be very good bullets.
Steve, I guess some folks look at it that way. Myself, I've got a soft spot for medium bore rifles. Like fine wine, one is richer having a selection of various vintages to choose from. LOL!
Another option would be looking at Hawk bullets. They are offered with different jacket thickness to match the bullet to the game you intend to hunt.. When I get back from my hunt in Namibia this May I'm going to obtain some from Hawk and do some load development to see how they preform.
