    African Style Range

Just got an email back from Monty. His school is open until July 15 this season. He said he still has some openings and the phone number on the website is the best way to get ahold of him.

    Binocular recommendations?

Thanks for all of the input so far, guys. I'm going to head to Cabela's this week and spend a little time checking out some optics. I'm primarily going to look at the Swaro SLC's and the Leupold Golden Ring HD's. I'd also like to get my hands on a nice low power scope for my CZ .375H&H...

    CZ 550 Scope Mount

Mike, Those Tally's fit right onto the existing 19mm dovetail on the receiver? I'm looking into a 1.5-5 Leupold VXIII for my .375 and these rings would be pretty nice for it!

    Binocular recommendations?

Hello all, I'm currently looking into a good set of binoculars for general hunting use as well as to brough to Zimbabwe with me. I have numerous Leupold rifle scopes and love their optics. Any suggestions as to what power/FOV/size binoculars would be best for hunting in Africa?

    A CZ 550 Surprise

I find the same issue with 500gr soft and solid Hornady rounds (DGX/DGS) Mostly a problem with the round coming up from the left side. Mine's heading out to AHR in January to have this rectified.

    Who has booked for 2010?

I booked July 2011 about a month ago, mostly to allow me the time to come up with the money to hunt cape buff AND tuskless cow ele on the same safari.

Got my back up gun for Africa!

Not the best picture, but it'll have to do for now until I get my D40 charged up. I think I might look into a Leupold VXIII 1.5-5x for this one and I'll definitely leave the .458 with iron sights only. .375 above the .458

Got my back up gun for Africa!

Funny you mention that. The same day I bought my .458 I bought a Weatherby in .300 win mag to use for plains game and pretty much EVERYTHING on the North American continent. Great shooting gun and really feels like a cap gun after shooting a handfull of .458's! Still haven't gotten out to...

Got my back up gun for Africa!

Well, stopped by a local shop today which I usually don't frequent due to high prices and found a wonderful little gem on consignment for a GREAT price and in GREAT condition. Walked out with a CZ 550 African Safari Magnum in .375 H&H mag, with rings, for $650. According to the original owner...

    New hunting knife

Yes it is, realized I left out "Drake" after the time alloted to edit the post (difficult to type in quantity on an iPhone!). I'll try to get some pictures up tonight or tomorrow. Here's are some pictures from Lewis Drake and Associates website. Their pictures truly do no justice.

    New hunting knife

USPS dropped me off a wonderful little pick me up this rainy afternoon before heading into work! Just before Thanksgiving I ordered the utility hunting knife from and Associates. It has a 3 1/2" damascus steel blade (nearly 1/8" thick!), and a wonderfully polished cape buffalo horn handle along...

    A CZ 550 Surprise

I actually just bought one about a month ago in .458 Lott, myself. I echo your feelings about the trigger, I really like it, very little creep. The feeding is another story. With just one round in the magazine, it feeds up fine. More than one round in the magazine, and both softs and solids get...

First time shooting my .458 Lott........

Well, like the title says, took my CZ 550 American Safari Magnum in .458 Lott with a box of Hornady 500gr DGX and DGS ammo to the range for a first firing today. Was planning on shooting it at our 50 yrd outdoor range, but there were 4 or 5 people there shooting pistols (only about an 8 person...

    Lead Sleds

I've no experience with them, but I've seen a model at Cabela's which has hydraulic dampening to it, the Hyskore Dangerous Game. The description says it is good up to .416, not sure how it would handle your .500.

How will you measure the value of a hunt, in Inches or in memories?

Neil, Being a total greenhorn to the Africa scene, I humbly must say I am doing it for the memories and enjoyment of the great past time. Just being able to experience the the wonder of hunting Africa is trophy enough for me. Brandon

    Left Hand CZ 550

Well, I think you've sold me on the AHR package 2 for my rifle. Is the fiber optic standard in this package or did you request it? What was their turn around time like?
  28. Brandon.Gleason

    Left Hand CZ 550

Thanks for the pics, Mike. My biggest qualm with my new rifle is the tiny, somewhat difficult to see, front sight post. The fiber optics look like they solve that issue. Does the 3-pos safety change out the entire back end of the bolt?? The rear of your bolt looks quite different than mine...

    Left Hand CZ 550

Mike, I'd love to see some pictures of AHR's work if you get a free minute to post some. I'm going to send of my CZ to them more likely than not in the late winter to have it worked over and smoothed out. Thanks. Brandon

    Trip booked!

Thanks Jerome. Mike is actually who turned me onto Martin's company and the reason I booked with Martin. I'm rather excited and a bit on the apprehensive side (mostly about the travel) all at the same time. Well, I've got a good amount of time to get everything sorted out and get in shape for this!

    Trip booked!

Just mailed my deposit to Martin Pieters for a tuskless cow elephant/cow cape buffalo hunt for 12 days in July 2011! I know quite far out, but I'd like to really take my time planning this out! I'm also planning on taking a few species of plains game while I'm there should time/opportunity...

    Which caliber for me?

Well, got the call from my gunshop today that my CZ AND my Weatherby were in! CZ 550 American Safari Magnum in .458 Lott and Weatherby Vanguard Synthetic in .300 Win Mag. The Weatherby is awaiting a Leupold VXIII 4.5-14x50 as soon as the rings and bases come in.

    1st timers animal choice!

I am truly envious! I'll be starting out with tuskless cow elephant, cow cape buffalo, and AT LEAST tag an impala and warthog atop that. I'd love to make this a bi-yearly venture if possible.

    Which caliber for me?

I ordered the field grade walnut stock. I did verify with my smith that it is double crossbolts before I ordered it through him. Any benefits to having mercury recoil reducers put in? I'm not recoil shy by any means, but this is a whole new game to me.

Thanks to all for your information and suggestions. Ordered my CZ550 American Safari magnum (the one I linked above) in .458 Lott today! :cloud9: Already thinking about my next big bore! Thanks for the input, guys. I will be gathering info on different safari outfits and countries (now looking at Zimbabwe and Tanzania along with South Africa) over the next few months. As a few of you have said, half the fun is in the planning and anticipation! :D I'll probaby get in contact...

How far out do you book your safaris?

As the title implies, I'm interested in how far in advance I should actually book my safari. So far, I'm pretty set on South Africa, with a primary focus on a cape buffalo. The number and type of other animals harvested will be dependant on projected available funds. I'm looking to do 10-14 days...

Hunting Accommodation - Luxury or Basic?

DLS, that looks like the type of camp I wouldn't mind spending 2-3 weeks in! :D When I do get there in 2011, come hell or high water, I'd like to go as "primitively luxurious" as I can. I like tent camping (all those years in the Boy Scouts!), yet I like to be comfortable and in a well...

    Which caliber for me?

After looking at the two .458's, I'm starting to side with all of you on the .458 Lott! Seems like this will be the rifle I order, although I'm not a big fan of the straight stock: CZ-USA -> CZ 550 American Safari Magnum I'd like to get my hands on it now in order to get as much time behind...

    Which caliber for me?

I'm looking for my first "Africa" worthy rifle. I'm planning to get there in 2011 for cape buffalo to start what I hope to be a long love affair with hunting the great continent.
