    35 whelen pressures

That’s awesome Bob, I’ve always been a fan of those Hornady Round nose since I was a younger lad getting into reloading. I had used a 220g Round nose in my 30/06 at the time to take a 435 pound black bear, shot him in the shoulder at 20 yards and it broke both shoulder and cuaght the bullet in...

    35 whelen pressures

The furthest I’ve had to opportunity to take game was on a black bear at 200 yards, the barnes exited and dropped him instantly. I could not find accubonds or partitions for a long time so hornady round nose , barnes tsx, and north forks that I did get will last me a long time. Speer hot cors...

    35 whelen pressures

Bob thank you for all that, I like to be able and compare everyone’s different experiences and results along with my own. Your velocities make sense compared to mine as I’m running a 22” barrel here in the thick timber. I was having an issue with hornady brass and after say 4 firings I’d start...

    Large chamber / short throat

Thanks guys that does help, I do know my action ( 1903 Springfield) can indeed take a longer coal as I have 3 others which are all throated to 0.300” longer. I took a chamber cast this morning after checking the trapline and the case dimensions are spot on, but it looks as my rifling starts...

    Large chamber / short throat

Thanks for the sight guys, I do enjoy a new challenge here and there just to keep the spark alive during the winter. Hoping to finalize this with an old original redfeild 2-7 scope but I’ll need to send that out as the glass is starting to fog over and after 4x the clarity goes to crap. So for...

    Large chamber / short throat

Ok thank you for that, I also just took measurements of 3 other whelens just to get a comparison on this throat length, which seems to be the reason this particular rifle cant chamber factory ammo. For reference: all compared to the measurements on this one in discussion -1903 chambered to 35...

    Large chamber / short throat

I’m back on another project, this one an old 1903 Springfield higher number chambered in 35 whelen. My favorite! I found this as an old timer a state away had built this and supposedly used it 5+ years ago but is now selling his collection. So anyways I grabbed this and started taking...

    New Lipseys M77 .35 Whelen

Glad to see so many whelen fans, my African m77 should be here in a week or so. Headed to Montana to bear hunt and see how the Remington 700 will do. 225 TSX at 2600 FPS using varget at the moment. CFE load in my stainless m77 and 225 North Forks at 2650. 22” barrels. My stainless Ruger has a...

    35 whelen pressures

I don’t have access to MR -2000 currently but do have a pile of cfe223 hence the usage, and it may be because I’m testing at shorter distances ( 100 yards) that I’m not going to see massive differences between powders for what I have on hand ? I figured if In my 22” barrels if I could at least...

    35 whelen pressures

When you guys are running imr 4064 and getting 2500 FPS can I ask what grain weight your running? I never went beyond 54 grains just because I stopped at the book max and my velocity was under 2300 so I moved onto the mext powder but I see Ken waters did go up as high as 55-56 grains. Just...

    35 whelen pressures

Today’s weather was enough to slow down work, 30 mph sustained winds, 50 mph gusts and a foot of wet snow. So after plowing my 1/4 mile driveway and cleaning the mess of trees up etc... I figured I’d get more tests in. I tried to go back to 62 grains to see if maybe ES would change, and it was...

    35 whelen pressures

Thanks for that. That at least gives me an idea what average everyone is running, and exactly how I run my loads is, I try to have a roughly known max pressure, then even if I find my load is 1-3 grains lower say, I can compare my pressures and velocities but also feel good about knowing I’m not...

    35 whelen pressures

That’s awesome I appreciate that as a reference. so I guess my next question is what is accepted as the operating “pressure” for 35 whelen? I see in your RED which is what you did not like it’s over 63,000. Lee 2nd addition does show loads right around 60,000 in there higher loads. Speer...

    35 whelen pressures

I see what your saying, I’ve actually haven’t had to go “full potential” to accomplish what I’ve needed, In the last 15 short years of my life I’ve been using a 45/70 hand loaded to a below full potential load but has yet to ever fail, cast Bullets being my main choice but I started with premium...

    35 whelen pressures

I feel full potential could be variable, I’m not sure on Bob’s location or normal temps but ours range from 0-80 as far as when I’m shooting, and ranges as far as hunting 100 yards and in. Though full potential is fun I do appreciate the variable speeds people are giving to compare to my own...

    35 whelen pressures

by the looks of it the 225 seems to be more common with you guys. Barnes being considerably more rugged than a cup and core, I don’t want anyone to give exact load data but are you guys noticing your loads at a max charge? 4064 did amazing groups in my 22” and there was room to spare but if I...

    35 whelen pressures

Thanks again guys for the info. When running 4064 IMR “max” at 54 grains i was In the 2200 FPS range H4895 after 52 grains my groups were horrible, and velocities were 2300’s Varget at just under max I was 2300’s and awesome dime size groups. My goal was to run the 250’s at 2400 out of this...

    35 whelen pressures

Thanks for the detailed experience, when you noticed that CFE223 was temp sensitive, just how bad was your testing when seeing it? Being a hunter and not a long range shooter my shots being 300 yards and in. 9 times out of ten my shots are under 100 actually BUT I do like to reload and make...

    35 whelen pressures

It’s actually Bobs posts I found that put me on track with CFE223. In which I was happy to break 2400 FPS until I was then breaking 2500 FPS. To add to my data collected each grain increase I had gave me an average of 30 FPS more. Cases all extracted easily, bolt lift normal, etc... the normal...

    35 whelen pressures

I’ve done some serious digging on the search menu here and many other forums, it’s hard to find more than 1 or 2 cases to concretely determine what I’m trying to lock down. I have seen a few guys running CFE223 do get impressive velocity, and my Maine concern now is running 250g bullets...

    Large rifle magnum primers

Considering what they used to cost for a very long time we had it very easy and now with everyone becoming a reloader since covid the demand has rocketed more on all components. I have scored some deals from guys who bought all new reloading equipment, primers, powder , etc... thinking they...

    Large rifle magnum primers

Our average for a brick of primers at the LGS is $99.00-$129.00 depending if you buy cci or match. there seems to be an abundance of match AR primers which I haven’t looked into see what the difference is between those are small rifle match yet.

I Thought My Gun Was Clean

On the majority of my rifles and revolvers, I use cast bullets. It is normal procedure when taking accuracy tests to give one Fouling shot before starting the testing. During hunting season I still will shoot just less as to keep the noise and commotion down but actually never clean it during...

    Receiver sights allowed/recommended?

I do have many scoped rifles in 308- 30/06. Being an avid handload I actually get sucked in to buying rifles just to load for them. I wouldn’t mind loading for any of the 40’s 416, 458 wm, or Lott. Even the 375 looks like some fun to load for, but as I’m setting up now I HAVE all the components...

    Receiver sights allowed/recommended?

Thanks, I have been working with some North Fork CNS and SP using both irons and the 2x scope. where I’m located here I have used ghost ring sights all my life but on black bears at dark it’s harder to get a great sight picture 20 minutes after sunset. Any time before that it’s not an issue. My...

    Receiver sights allowed/recommended?

Thank you for that insight, great concept to think about where time is limited to only maybe getting one chance at an animal.

    Receiver sights allowed/recommended?

Good to hear thank you, most of my life has been hunting in the thick bush with majority of shots in the 50yd range. I have had to walk away from many animals due to the fact the irons do not give as clear or as precise of a shot, though I think that’s more of the attraction to them for myself.

    Receiver sights allowed/recommended?

How to PH’s feel about clients who prefer to use ghost rings? I have used red dots in the past and see their advantages, but for now trying to stick with either my irons if allowed and up close, or a low magnifying scope to gain a slight edge on low light/ more precise shot placement after a...

    Receiver sights allowed/recommended?

Bolt gun and lever guns mostly. Those are my majority of use, a double is out of my league I think for now. I have my receiver sights setup at ghost rings when hunting. Here in the states we also are not being guided by someone who may have expectations and are not surrounded by animals that...

    Receiver sights allowed/recommended?

Very new here guys, and have found a ton of info in the search bar. I’m seeing more and more info regarding optics and irons mostly for a backup option. Kevin Robertson in his book says he really only recommends irons for elephants and the rest is always some type of optic. Obviously giving a...
