    Elephant hunting Paranoid

In most of the videos where I’ve seen charges, the opening shot was not properly done. STUDY ELEPHANT ANATOMY. Things happen and the hunting of elephants absolutely must be treated with respect and seriousness. But it goes well the vast majority of the time.

Safari Season 2024 Has Started - Where We Going?

Heading tomorrow to Capetown for a few days of city stuff then up to the Caprivi for buffalo with my son. Then we’ll have nearly two weeks without a plan. We’ll figure it out when we get there.

Do I carry Scope in carry-on? Checked luggage? Attached to rifle in locked box itself?(Joberg/SA Flight, United)

meds may be hard to replace; definitely carry on. I usually pack a change of clothes in carry-on, at least underwear and socks but there’s stores in Africa. The one thing you must absolutely have is broken-in boots. Everything else can be replaced with proper application of money. But...

Do I carry Scope in carry-on? Checked luggage? Attached to rifle in locked box itself?(Joberg/SA Flight, United)

Leave it on the rifle. The scope won’t be useful without the rifle anyway so keep them together. The cargo hold is at the same pressure as the cabin. If your rifle case can’t protect your scope it won’t protect your rifle and the solution is to get an adequate case, not remove the scope.

How far can you expect to shoot an elephant?

I was really impressed with how it only took him about a half second to recover from what had to have been a very strong “WTF?!!” Reaction to calmly encouraging the hunter and sorting things out. That is extreme professionalism!

How far can you expect to shoot an elephant?

On the one hand, 145 yards is quite far for elephant. On the other hand, if you are taking a lung shot, you’d have to be fairly incompetent to miss at that range. It’s a lot better than this travesty: I think we can all agree that a hip shot at a departing elephant isn’t an appropriate...

How far can you expect to shoot an elephant?

29 yards for mine. You aren’t obligated to take a shot. If offered a shot at 140 yards (odds are very low anyone would offer that shot), you can politely turn it down. And as mentioned above, tell your PH you are looking to take a shot at no more than whatever distance is your comfortable...

    Question for military/LE

It’s pretty compact, decent terminal effect, Good magazine capacity, accurate. Makes sense for law enforcement, hostage rescue, if you want to take prisoners, avoid collateral casualties, and/or you think there is something in the room that you want intact for intelligence purposes. But for...

Scientists Call For Halt To Elephant Hunting Along Kenya-Tanzania Border

Based on the amount of wood it took for me to burn two goats to bone, I’d say the real risk was deforestation if they indeed burned an elephant. Love to know how they did it because clearly I was doing something wrong.

    Blaser R8 Owner in USA

Linseed oil generates heat as it oxidizes. If oily rags that are piled up or bunched up such that they insulate themselves, enough heat can build up to start a fire. It’s not going to start a fire in the can or on the stock. Not that you are likely to use a bunch of rags repairing some...

Jim Green boot hides claim “natural dead buffalo hides “, a good story?

They are well designed for the conditions they are intended for. Just as a thin linen shirt would be comfortable in a hot humid environment but not in a cold Canadian rain, soft gum soles are great on dry flat terrain, but not on wet rocky slopes. A typical heavy lugged stiff American boot...

    Short notice rifle permit- Frankfurt

    Politics of Cartridge Minimums?

aside from cartridges above the minimum being more effective, the minimum also sets a barrier for entry on game that really shouldn't be hunted by novice hunters. What's up with todays' gun shops?

you are so correct about Clinton being the greatest black rifle salesman the country has ever seen. In the early 80s, you’d see some big ads for black rifles in Soldier of Fortune but it wasn’t until the ban that that type of rifle became mainstream. And the ban unleashed firearms creativity...

What's up with todays' gun shops?

I do not. Don't even need iron sights at that range. Not sure what that has to do with anything though as I tend to shoot at longer ranges than that. do you disagree that a z6i 1-6 is an appropriate optic for a dangerous game rifle or do you disagree that it is an LPVO?

    Leopard or elephant in 2025

Then for sure prioritize leopard just make sure to have a plan for the children. isn't a LPVO exactly a dangerous game scope? The (sadly discontinued) Z6i 1-6 EE is widely considered the holy grail of dangerous game scope. Low power variable optic well before LPVO was the trendy name for it and well before such scopes were the new hotness in the AR world. I no longer...

    460 S&W hunting bullet

I'm not sure if they make handgun bullets or not, just thinking if they are turning bullets one by one in a lathe, there isn't much barrier to entry on a new bullet. At least for a flat point non-expanding type- making a hollow point would require some extra equipment and testing.

Perhaps one of the South African monolithic bullet manufacturers can turn up a batch of what you need. Peregrine and GS custom come to mind. Claw makes 300g bonded 45 handgun bullets but in 454; I'd imagine you could bring a sizing die if they won't run a batch for you at 451.

What's up with todays' gun shops?

I'm fully aware that Mausers were military rifles. Kids today are doing exactly the same thing that has been done forever; that was in fact my point. What's up with todays' gun shops?

my point exactly. I’ve grown tired of people talking about “kids today”. First of all, kids today are pretty much like kids of any other generation. And if they aren’t, perhaps look to the people who raised them, I.e, usually the people bitching about kids today.

    Leopard or elephant in 2025

Not sure this is directly addressing your question, but I’d strongly advise doing elephant now and leopard in the future unless you really really want a leopard and are more or less indifferent to a leopard. An elephant hunt involves a lot of walking. A leopard hunt involves a lot of sitting...

    Not-so-stinky Sunscreen

300 Weatherby vs 300 Win Mag

Main reason I want something in 308 caliber is I have a suppressor that needs a home. Haven’t decided what way to go with it yet. On the one hand I’m thinking a 300 Weatherby gives me a lot of versatility, most of which I’ll likely never use as I don’t generally hunt at long range. The other...

Reptiles sure are different. I shot the head off a copperhead and its heart was still beating over an hour later when I skinned it and gutted it. My son was a little guy when he shot an alligator. Good-looking head shot. It looked plenty dead. It twitched its leg a little when we picked it...

Proper Dangerous Game Rifle followup when the client can't followup?

I agree to a certain extent but to be fair most buffalo hunts end without trouble and handicaps don’t come into play. A good first shot from a guy in a wheelchair beats a bad shot from a professional rugby player. When it does end up with potential trouble, more often than not, it’s because...

1 MOA accuracy less common than you think ?

MOA (or any other measure of dispersion) is a measure of precision, not of accuracy. Precision is how close the shots are to each other, not how close they are to the intended point of impact. A 1 MOA rifle shoots a 1MOA group. Whether that group is anywhere near the intended target is a...
