    Taxidermists near DFW

@gizmo and Top of Texas Taxidermy have handled several batches of taxidermy for me. The work he did on the trophies from my October 2020 Zambia trip was amazing. He's very well-priced and fair for the great work he does.

    Trophy alternatives

I also had mounts made of stuff that I probably shouldn't have. Having said that, there is very little taxidermy that I will have done in the future. Limpopo Bushbuck and Spotted Hyena as shoulder mounts and Hippo and Crocodile as Euro's. Pictures will suffice for everything else.

SOUTH AFRICA: Deflowering The .505 With DAVE FREEBURN SAFARIS (Special Guest Spike T)

Dave got us safely back to JNB and I met up with Mr. X who assisted me getting my rifles checked in. I bid farewell to Mani and Sergio as they made their way home on an earlier flight. I picked up more stuffed animals for my granddaughters at Out of Africa Kids. Since I started this, I find a...

SOUTH AFRICA: Deflowering The .505 With DAVE FREEBURN SAFARIS (Special Guest Spike T)

What is it like to hunt with us? I'd say we're fun. We TRY not to make the outfitter or staff crazy. I'm not saying that doesn't happen. OUTTAKES, BLOOPERS, ETC Mani asked me to pick up some leaf chewing tobacco for him. I got an assortment.

SOUTH AFRICA: Deflowering The .505 With DAVE FREEBURN SAFARIS (Special Guest Spike T)

During the later afternoon, we went to the area by the river separating Dave's farm from Botswana. There is no water at the moment. Mani got to shoot Mike's .500J and I got to shoot Mani's .505 Gibbs. Sergio shot my humble .416 Ruger with and then without the muzzle brake. He noticed the...

SOUTH AFRICA: Deflowering The .505 With DAVE FREEBURN SAFARIS (Special Guest Spike T)

The next morning, I talked to Dave. The plan had been to go to TweeRivier to hunt Limpopo Bushbuck. We clearly didn't have time. After shooting the Zebra and using part of the Bushbuck trophy fee to cover that, I still had a decent amount of money left over. I asked Dave what he had for...

SOUTH AFRICA: Deflowering The .505 With DAVE FREEBURN SAFARIS (Special Guest Spike T)

That night, we celebrated. The scene looked much like the victory feast at Winterfell Castle after the Army of the dead had been defeated and Arya killed the Night King. Some of you will get this reference. Much alcohol was consumed. Songs were sang. Stories were told. Having said that, it...

SOUTH AFRICA: Deflowering The .505 With DAVE FREEBURN SAFARIS (Special Guest Spike T)

If you want to hear additional details of Mani's hunt, ask him at DSC. He says that he intends to go next year when it is in Atlanta. He'll be the guy in the neon slacks. Now, the fight was going to be getting the bull out of the brush. Fortunately, Dave was able to summon workers and...

SOUTH AFRICA: Deflowering The .505 With DAVE FREEBURN SAFARIS (Special Guest Spike T)

It was definitely an all hands on deck situation. I wasn't particularly worried about my own hunt as I really wanted to help my friend find his bull. And it was an adventure. Along the way, we saw some of my favorite wildlife. The one thing that I can say is that the search was relentless...

SOUTH AFRICA: Deflowering The .505 With DAVE FREEBURN SAFARIS (Special Guest Spike T)

The first thing I want to apologize for are the number of typos in my report so far. I really can spell. I promise. DAY THREE: I really could say that Days Four and Five were exactly like this one. Tracker John picked up the tracks in the morning and Dave and Mani started after his wounded...

SOUTH AFRICA: Deflowering The .505 With DAVE FREEBURN SAFARIS (Special Guest Spike T)

Later afternoon on Day Two. We approached a waterhole and observed an old bull. Dave and Mani made their way through the brush towards him. He is old and grand. Mani gets on the sticks. The bull offers a full frontal shot. Mani, a fantastic shot on game the world over, sends a 525-grain TSX...

SOUTH AFRICA: Deflowering The .505 With DAVE FREEBURN SAFARIS (Special Guest Spike T)

Day two began the same as the first. We would come across fresh tracks, dismount and follow. We would get close, but the bulls would wind us and take off. I had not expected this to be easy. Of the entire group, I was the one to be caught by thorns the most. At times, I didn't even know why...

    Hornady CX Bullets

I have a Christensen Ridgeline in .300 PRC and I've used the Hornady Outfitter 190-grain CX on two hunts so far. In my rifle, the CX was much more accurate than the 212-grain ELD-X. It was also like the hammer of Thor on all of the plains game that I've shot with it. I've struggled a little...

Zambia Hunt At Takeri Private Reserve Zambia 2024 & 2025

Mike has a spot on his farm that I call "Bushbuck Plaza". It's a forested area that the moment you drive into, you hear the little bastards barking at you. Sooner or later, you see one of them standing on a termite mound watching you. It's pretty interesting.

Any reason not to use a 300 PRC for Plains Game??

I have a tendency to obsess about certain guns. Having said this, I purchased a Christensen Ridgeline in 6.5 PRC and took it on a hunt with Dave Freeburn. It was fantastic. After that, I just had to have the .300 PRC. I got another Christensen Ridgeline. After, I found myself with mixed...

The Ideal African "Light Rifle", that is the Question?

My favorite Heavy is going to be my Ruger Hawkeye Guide Gun in .416 Ruger. Over the course of nine safaris, I've carried a .30-06, a .338-06, a 6.5 PRC, a 9.3x62 and a .300 PRC as my "light" or only rifle. I consider the 9.3x62 to be my most useful rifle when ranges aren't going over 200 yards...

Zambia Hunt At Takeri Private Reserve Zambia 2024 & 2025

The Sable pictured above is the second fantastic bull I took on Takeri. It's the one in my avatar. That will always be one my favorite hunts. The fact that we did it in October 2020 in the middle of Covid made it challenging but it was worth it.

    Reloading questions for 416 Ruger

You can find load data in the Nosler, Hornady and Swift manuals. In this, I'm referring to their load development with their bullets. I began with starting loads and worked up from there. I didn't have a COAL for the .416 Ruger, but I did for the .375 Ruger. In my rifle, Power Pro 2000-MR...

I have a NULA M24 in .338-06 that I ordered from Melvin at SHOT in 2016. I love the rifle and caliber, but I really wish I had chosen something else like 9.3x62. Moose Hunting 101

I've hunted Moose in Newfoundland twice and unfortunately, I'm 0-2. I had a great outfitter, a great guide (who did all he could) with a great lodge, but he was operating on easily accessible public land. If I go back, I'll look at Arluk Outfitters. Good luck with your quest.

Ruger Hawkeye African .375 Ruger as Dangerous Game rifle?

The only issue I ever experienced with either my African .375 Ruger or my Guide Gun .416 Ruger was that the .416 would not feed the first round when three were loaded in the magazine. I would load two and load one straight to the chamber. Yes, Ruger says they designed to do that, but I don't...

If you were to trim down your dangerous game rifle collection, which cartridge/rifle would you let go and why?

I have three. Ruger Hawkeye African in .375 Ruger Ruger Hawkeye Guide Gun in .416 Ruger Ruger Safari Magnum in .458 Lott I have a Forbes M24B in 9.3x62. I do not consider that a dangerous game rifle. The caliber is amazing, but I will always err on the side of caution. I love the .375, but I...

    Which Bullet Weight For Eland?

Considering that this hunt was five years ago, I can tell you that there was absolutely no issue. In the end, I wound up using the .338-06 for the Eland.
