    Shooting off sticks

It is made of steel, but not heavy at all though. Its actually well ballenced and comfortable to carry. I am sure Aluminium would be lighter but unfortunately i cant weld alu. I must also admit that i was drawn to steel from the get go as i wanted a sturdy platform. Its only 10 x 10cm and 3mm...

    Shooting off sticks

I was just about to say the same! Being a South African and hunting every year its basically second nature shooting off of sticks. It would be wise to ask the PH what sticks he plans on using as there are many different types. And OP is correct in asking what to feel as there is a HUGE...

    Chassis Rifle for Africa

    Chassis Rifle for Africa

Other then being "slightly" uncomfortable on african stalks through thick bush, and "possible" legal issues regarding the folding stock. I dont see why people have an issue with stock vs chassis. The bullet (in this case a 30cal) is the same bullet exiting the rifle regardless of what the rifle...

Bore tech and cleaning your rifle

It is no supprise that I bought my first rifle. No that i am waiting on my license (got to love South african law) I am doing research to pass the time. Altough I have been hunting for the past 6 years, it has always been with friends or family's weapons. This said, I have no clue as to the...

    Barrel break-in and maintenance

Ask 10 different people and get 10 different answers. But I want to know what the members thoughts are on barrel break in and cleaning. Growing up it was a no brainer. If you bought a new rifle you had to break in te barrel, and after every use ir hunting trip you had to clean your rifle. And...

Carrying your rifle in the bush

Random question that entered my mind, how do you the members carry your rifle when in the bush? Lets exclude DG hunting for this as i believe the majority will not use a sling when DG hunting. However for PG I was wondering who used slings over the shoulder and who carried their rifles in their...

    260 rem versus 6.5 CM

I recently bought a 6.5CM for the same reason as what the OP has enquired about. The main point which i think most people who posted are missing is thatbhe is looking for a rifle for the KIDS. I had all the same questions regarding the CM vs 260 vs swede. What was the deciding factor for me was...

Aussie Scopes- Zerotech Vengeance 4x20 thoughts?

As with my other threads i am pulling on the knowledge of the AH members. The rifle has been bought, the ammo as been decided(depending on how it shoots through the rifle) and now i am at the scope. Have to do something while i wait on the license. What are the thoughts of the the Zerotech...

Magpul 700 hunter stock, worth it?

I might be able to pick up a magpul hunter 700 stock for my new 6.5. I am sure it beats the cheap plastic stock it comes with from Remington. My question is how practical is the magpul stock for ACTUAL HUNTING purposes? It seems to be loved in the tactical world but has anyone carried the...

I am a fan of the Boids "at one" stock. Fully adjustable, looks great and still practical enough for hunting.

    Monolithic in 6.5

If I am not mistaken you build a super light rifle with a custom stock recently? Wouldn't the 260 also make a great light rifle? Or are you going to go the opposite ruite and look for a chassis system this time?

    Monolithic in 6.5

Who has experience in using monos in the 6.5? I have heard many good things regarding the TTSX and GMX bullets, and locally we have a manufacturer called Peregrine Bullets which makes Monos with a slightly higher BC as the two mentioned above. As i bought my first rifle this week (6.5cm) i was...

What's the deal with stainless barrels

Thanks, i honestly like the look of the stainless and black synthetic stock, i view rifles as tools and as such expect them to work. I don't mind nicks and scratches because its a tool. I can admire beautiful rifles but again would not want to take them into the bush because i know what would...

What's the deal with stainless barrels

I just came across a stainless Howa 30-06 on an online shop. I know the Alaskan hunters like them, but they aren't popular here in South Africa. I have frequently heard that there are a couple of downsides to a SS barrel especially that it wears faster then standard blue. And that they still...

    Opinions on the middle rifle

When you do acquire the double and come to Africa. Get yourself a proper pair of "Vellies" to hunt in. Being from Africa it is as much a part of Africa as the game we have to offer. So to round off the full experience of hunting with a double you have to wear "Vellies" For those who don't...

    Warthog Skull Mount

The tusks are slightly larger when you get then skull mounted as much of the skin covers them,. So they might look small when you shoot them. But after it is mounted you realize the actual scale. What caught me by supprise was just how sharp those bottom teeth are. I mean i knew that they were...

    .30-06 vs .375 H&H Magnum

First of i realize this is an old thread, but would you really choose the 375 for 300+m shots as opposed to the 30 06? I have been wondering myself as which caliber to buy. I am leaning towards the 375 as i mostly bush hunt. Although once a year we go to Secunda for longer distance shots. Which...

    Buffalo or elephant?

Have never hunted ele or buff. But being from South Africa i have been very close to both, ele just has that "Shit your pants faster" thing going for it when they get irritable. But if i may ask, why is Tuskless cows most rewarding?

    Opinions on the middle rifle

Why not consider an African favorite 9.3 x 62 seeing as you have "no need" for a specific caliber but rather an itch to scratch. Its different, effective for its purpose and from what i gather not so common in the US

Is it worth getting a 375?

The right one at the right price. I have been looking around and have seen a couple. But every year (except the last 2) we have an hunting exhibition called Huntex. They normally have very giod specials. So keen on having a look this year as i heard they might be open this year

    Warthog Skull Mount

Thinking about it its the same as store bought bacon, its delicious until you have traditionally made cured bacon old school style. After tasting the real deal, the store bought prosessed bacon isn't as good as you you remember. Same thing applies here. Pork was great until i had warthog.
  40. Elton

    Warthog Skull Mount

If i had a choice, i would never eat "normal" pork again if i could get warthog. Nothing wrong with pork. But this is just better. Its hard to explain as you still get a "pork" taste but yet its not the same. If you manage to get some, i highly recommend you try it
  41. Elton

    Warthog Skull Mount

Honestly delicious!!! Made cheese sausage, shanks and left the hind roasts, did a low and slow pulled pork style with the roasts. Just wish there were more. Will have to hunt more than one this year.

    Warthog Skull Mount

Finally after waiting 6 months i received my warthog that i shot last year. Just thought of sharing as this turned...

    Expensive ammo

Tying in to my other thread of is it worth getting a 375, i want to know if it really is so expensive to shoot it? Is it worth getting a 375?

@shootist43 i have. Started looking at some Zastava 375, mind is set on a 375, now its just a question of the right price and obviously the legal battle. Buying a firearm in South Africa is almost as hard as getting my wife to apologize when i prove her wrong.

What age should you start them hunting?

I also have 10 plus in mind, will obviously teach him how to shoot and track. And have fun with the "windbuks". And take him on a hunt to see what happens and if it is for him. But to actually shoot the animal i feel he should be able to understand as you said that a life is taken. To be...

I am becoming a father, our little boy will be born in 6weeks and this got me thinking. What age do i start him hunting? Is it worth getting a 375?

I would also rather the 375 on a croc than the 300. Strangely enough i never thought of croc hunting? I have seen some photos here and there but never gave it any thought, croc meat is delicious so might put it on my list one day.

Is it worth getting a 375?

Mostly not only. Once a year i hunt open. Grasslands woth my brother in law in. Which case i shoot 450+m with his 6.5. But I prefer bushveld, and like i said. It all can be done woth the 06, but for some reason i want to get the 375. Think its an itch that needs to be scratched
