    25-06 Rem in Africa

First, remember that Bambi was a boy. Although I'd give it the nod for whitetail, I'd want a little more for elk. Second, African animals are not the same as NA animals. They are heavier boned and thicker skinned. Yes, it's good joo joo...but ALL cartridges have limitations. I'd much rather...

    Shotgun choices for a Woman

For a semi-auto, take a look at the Beretta A400 Xplor Action in 20 bore with 20 inch barrels. The A400 action is by far the softest shooting I've ever experienced. This also has an adjustable shim kit and a recoil pad that can be changed for LOP.

    Shotgun choices for a Woman

Along with the Beretta Vittoria 686 and (Fabarms) Syren mentioned by @mdwest...I would add the Krieghoff K-20 Victoria. My wife was using a Beretta 686 20 bore for clays and loved it.

Be careful who mounts your scopes

Regardless of brand, I've been amazed at how little contact the scope makes with the rings. Lapping just a little bit will reveal the truth. When doing this, I always match-mark the top halves to the bottom and mark which is front/back so everything stays uniform for best results. I suppose...

Be careful who mounts your scopes

This is a product used to show if something has moved. We use it at work as an anti-tamper or tell-tale to see if linkage has moved, bolts were loosened or something adjusted without our knowledge. If they are all intact, we know it's good to go. A little dab where the scope meets the rings and...

    Turkey

Our season doesn’t open until next weekend but things are looking good. We were there a month ago and saw 36 birds (30 hens & 6 Jakes) feeding across a field. Later in the day on a neighbor’s property there were at least 6 gobblers grazing but didn't get a picture. Hope to have something on...

Be careful who mounts your scopes

I've been considering switching to INNOMOUNT for the future, but it's unlikely I'll ever need to replace the Contessa mounts I have. Plus the added trouble of having to re-zero everything.

Be careful who mounts your scopes

This is a product using in the cycling world to hold parts together without having to stress the fasteners. Especially important when the screws are going into or clamping onto carbon fiber. This could also be used between the scope and rings. Safe for steel, alloys, carbon fiber and titanium...

Possibly best all around African caliber?

Like @375Fox said above, 375H&H is the "do it all in Africa" cartridge. 300 grain Barnes TSX (or Swift A-Frames) for everything. The exceptions being the T10, elephant and whenever the PH tells you to load solids. I prefer Woodleigh Hydros, but CEB Safari Solids are a good choice as well. A...

What Defines a Dangerous Game Rifle?

First it must meet the government criteria by being of sufficient caliber (9.3mm/.375” in most cases) and there can also be energy requirements. Some of the energy requirements are based on the game being hunted. These requirements are specific to the area you are hunting so make sure to consult...

    Caliber recommendations

The only reason I wouldn't consider it for Africa is ammo availability. For hunting on the home range it's certainly on the menu, but add in air travel and things can get complicated. I just like all my cartridges to be easily found if things go sideways.

    Caliber recommendations

Keep it simple and stick to common cartridges. 7RM, 30-06 and 300WM are excellent choices. The typical NA whitetail rifle would get the job done without breaking the bank. Premium bullets like the Barnes TTSX and Swift A-Frame will sort things out nicely. If you already have a 338WM, it would...

    A Nasty Cape Buffalo Charge!

Looks like Craig has done this a time or two in order to maintain such a calm state and place a perfect shot. Well done. One thing of note is that when he cycled the bolt, he grabbed the bolt handle with his fingers to work the action. I've heard several times how this is not the proper...

Montana Rifle Company TSAVO in .375 H&H - Shooting!!!

It looks like MRC is picking up where they left off. Good for them. It will be good to see another semi-custom CRF rifle that's DG ready out of the box for less than $4K...especially in this economy. My only criticism is the shape of the stock, particularly the comb. To each his own. These...

    Would you or wood you?

The fiddleback on the top blank is too much to resist and would be my first, second and third choice. If I was forced to pick another one, the one to the right of R33 because of the straight grain through the wrist. But honestly...the top one is where you want to be.

Opinions on the real big boys? 500J, 505 Gibbs, .500 NE, 577NE, 600NE, 700NE etc.

The term "reasonable" or "sensible choice" would depend greatly on the point of view. ;) By most accounts, stopping cartridges for a PH start at 458WM/458LOTT/450RIGBY for a bolt action or 450NE/470NE for a double. Of course the 500J, 500GIBBS, 500NE would all be better choices provided the...

Not the 577T-REX, but the 577NE used by J. Alain Smith on Cape buffalo. Personally, I thought his first shot was more than a little off, but with the second barrel it was enough to get it done quickly. Much to be said about having a bigger cartridge to push a bigger bullet and give some margin...

Does the price of ammo impact your choice of a rifle caliber

I've always chosen the caliber based on the game, say .375" caliber for instance. Then it's what specific cartridge in that range would be the most plentiful. Naturally it's 375H&H over the likes of 375RUGER, 375WBY, 378WBY, 375RUM...etc. The more plentiful means there is a (relative) surplus...

@MarkCZ - I’ve had a few friends in their late 50’s to mid-60’s recently give up on compound bows. Not just for the draw strength, but also being able to hold it there for several seconds if needed. It’s not easy and requires a commitment to physical strength that is beyond what some can...

LVPO question for a DG rifle

Dangerous game isn't dangerous at 100 yards. At 50 yards it gets interesting. 10-25 yards should have you puckered up, especially if they are charging. At those distances, what do you actually need? Maybe 4x at 100 yards...maybe? Most of us with eyes younger than 70 years are good with 2x at...

I watched the video you posted. If the recoil treats you like that, your mother may want to consider starting out with some reduced power loads. Full house 00-BUCK is no joke. Couple that with zero recoil mitigation (pump, SxS or O/U) and no butt stock...it could be a recipe for an extremely...

    Recoil reducers

I will say that a suppressor is at least more considerate to others than a brake. However, the added length and weight contribute to an awkward balance on a rifle.
