    14x1 thread on .375H&H muzzle

Hi all. Long time no see, it's been a hectic year in the NJC household! Hope you've all been keeping well. I'm just in the process of picking up a .375H&H. I want to have it threaded for a moderator/suppressor but don't have much barrel to play with. The best I can do is M14x1, which from what...

CZ550 vs Ruger Hawkeye African in 416?

I'd buy the CZ personally. If the synthetic stock is a Bell and Carlson Aramid which was the standard offering, it's bombproof. I don't like the stock of the Ruger on a hard recoiling rifle. They hurt me a lot more than a CZ ever has. Edit, my .416 Rigby 550 holds 4+1

    .375 bullet weight

We're not allowed to use solids for deer here. The bullets have to be expanding. With the larger calibres that generally means downloading to minimise damage, or in some cases I've gone for a really robust bullet designed for thick skinned game. They're expanding bullets, but on such a small...

    .375 bullet weight

It's not the recoil I was worried about, it was the deer! But then a heavy slow bullet will probably be fine. If I was to go light I'd slow that down too - a 200gr bullet at about 2200fps would be similar to a .375 Winchester, and only putting out a couple of thousand foot pounds.

    .375 bullet weight

Hi all, I've just bought myself a Sako 75 in .375H&H. Barrel twist is 1-12. I'm just wondering what bullet weights you've all experienced in the cartridge and how you got on with them? I'm looking to do a light reduced load for deer, maybe using 200gr bullets intended for .375 Winchester, and...

    500 Jeffery Club

I think our best bet is to start with a cheap Mauser copy. Do all the machine work on it, fiddle about. If we master it we can copy the dimensions over to a nice action and call it done. Have you got brass, bullets and dies there?

    500 Jeffery Club

That would be much appreciated. Spike doesn't need it... ;) I've got a Lothar Walther barrel, pre chambered and threaded for a Mauser action. It'll be built on whatever I can find, I have a couple in mind. It's a fun project with my gunsmith. He's never done one before and neither have I - we...

    500 Jeffery Club

I'm hoping to join the .500J club soon myself. Now I've mastered my .416 Rigby and can shoot it quite comfortably, I feel I am ready to move to the next step. The question is, is this the next step? Or am I moving up too fast?

    What Is Your Dream Rifle?

I'd struggle to pick a single favourite, but it would have to be a hand made English bolt action in a cartridge developed by the rifle maker. A .375 by Holland & Holland, a .416 by Rigby, and maybe a smaller bore like a .275 Rigby. A double rifle would be nice, but I don't know what. I'd want...

    Pros/cons of shortening a .416 Rigby?

Hi guys. I've just got back to shooting my CZ550 .416 Rigby after a bit of a break (covid, lack of enthusiasm etc!) and I'm thinking it's a big old lump of a gun for someone of my stature (5'6, 14 stone). I think I need to cut an inch off of the stock and I'd like to take a bit off of the barrel...

    .500 Jeffery action options?

That's an unusual looking gun in this calibre! I like your thinking though. I don't know much about the Savage 110 - is it a modular system which allows you to swap bolts etc, or was there a lot of work involved in what you did? Interesting info re. the scopes you've tried. I'm surprised that...

    .500 Jeffery action options?

Lots of good info there, thanks. I think there's a good chance that a hunt is enjoyed even more if the money you pay for it is relevant to you. As much as I'd love to be rich, I don't think it would be good for me. If you're able to go and do whatever you want, whenever you want, surely...

    .500 Jeffery action options?

It is pre threaded. It was tried on a standard length Mauser action and fitted, but we think that the threads on a magnum Mauser will be the same. Had it not been threaded I would probably build on a CZ550 Magnum because I'm quite familiar with them. I heard the hunting gods loud and clear...

    .500 Jeffery action options?

Given the choice I probably would go for a Gibbs. The thing is, my gunsmith stumbled across a pre chambered barrel in .500 Jeff and after a bit of a chat we've decided we could have a play and see what we can do with it. The whole idea kind of evolved from finding the barrel!

Well that was a bit silly. I can't judge a fellow Whelen user too harshly though - you're not so daft!

    .500 Jeffery action options?

Ah guys! Talk about throwing a spanner in the works! surely if Jeffery had their rifles made on a magnum 98, I should do the same? My gunsmith has a bucket full of standard 98's - he's just potentially found a magnum for a good price though. Why would you choose a standard length over a magnum...

    Hornady DGX .375 UK shortage?

There are. I've managed to source a box from a friend thankfully. I just couldn't stand the idea of this guys hunt going down hill due to a lack of ammo. That would be so sad!

    Hornady DGX .375 UK shortage?

Hi all. I've just been reading over on a local deer stalking forum of a guy who's got himself in a bit of a predicament. He's got a .375 double regulated for 300gr Hornady DGX but has run out of bullets. He's got a trip booked and no ammo! He's put up a post asking for 15 of them - I don't...

    .500 Jeffery action options?

There are 25.4mm to the inch. So M28x2 is very close to 1.1"x12tpi. 1 1/8"UNF is 28.575mm and 12tpi. A thread every 2mm would be about 12.7 to the inch. My maths was never that strong mind! My guess is that it would be wrong enough to not fit.

You were there, just for a moment! Now we've gone full circle and we're back where we started! Cheers for the info, I'll look them up. I'd love to have a chat with the chap with the Zastava if that's possible - you can't beat real world experience. I'll look up the M17 Enfield too -...

    .500 Jeffery action options?

Nice looking rifle! I'd probably build off of a Brno or CZ but I'm in the unusual position of my gunsmith finding a barrel ready to go. That's not a common approach but it's there, so it seems silly not to use it. Finding this barrel has kind of been the only prompt I've had to start a project -...

Just Ordered My First Medium Bore Rifle

That's a nice rifle and cartridge. Extremely well mannered considering what it's capable of. I often think I should have got another .375H&H instead of my .416 Rigby that I have now. I could fire my old Brno .375 over and over from any position, no fuss. My Rigby... I haven't had the nerve to...

I’m itching for a new rifle or shotgun

Marlin 1895 is a nice .45-70. Try to find an old JM stamped one rather than a Remlin (Remington bought out Marlin and quality plummeted).

    .500 Jeffery action options?

Hi all, It's been a while since I popped a post up on here, I hope you're all keeping well? I'm not sure where or how, but it's there and apparently threads nicely into...

Is .280 Remington available in Africa?

Hi all. I'm thinking of rebarrelling my 6.5x55 to .280 Remington AI but just wondered what the chances would be of finding ammunition in Africa if I visit? It seems easy enough to get in bigger shops here in the UK but I don't know about abroad. I think it's about the best flat/hard hitting...

    35 Whelen vs 9.3x62

Some guys at the pistol range by me use them in .308 to shoot .32S&W or .32acp through their .308's. I've got one for my BBF97. They can actually group pretty well at close range through some guns. According to my FEO they don't need a slot on your FAC for the adaptor as they're smooth bore, but...

    35 Whelen vs 9.3x62

@Bob Nelson 35Whelen I do wonder how much I actually need to stoke up the loads for my everyday shooting? A fallow deer, which is about as big as we get in my area, weighs about 80kg. Hardly a big animal and my ranges will around 200m at the most. To be legal in Scotland it needs to exceed...

Chamber cast and slug the bore for sure. People make all sorts of weird and wonderful calibres and this sounds like one of them!

    35 Whelen vs 9.3x62

I'm pretty sure I asked for 22". That seemed a good compromise between short and not losing too much velocity. We tend to moderate most of our hunting rifles here in the UK so that will add 4-6" to the rifle. With the weight on the muzzle too it gets very out of balance if the barrel is too...

Anyone loading .416 300gr Barnes TSX?

Thanks John. Good to know they work well on smaller game. That's pretty much all I'll be shooting with my rifle for now.

    35 Whelen vs 9.3x62

Well it's nice to see a Whelen thread come up on here. The timing couldn't be better. My gunsmith has just finished my Sako 75 build so once it's done at proof, I'll be good to go! I picked the Whelen over the 9.3 for a number of reasons. For a start, as well as conventional rifle bullets it's...

Is there such a thing as too big?

Realistically I'm not sure I can see myself shooting anything much bigger than I have. My .416 Rigby rattles me. I'm at the point where I'd have the confidence to hunt with it but I know what's coming and I'm not shy of saying it's not something I look forward to! With covid my range time has...

    Supporting a charity

Hi all. I've been following an anti rhino poaching charity called Protrack on Facebook for some time now and their work looks to be good. Crf Rifles Encountered While Hunting?

The thing with UK shooters is we have absolutely nothing which can hurt us. Not really. We have boar and deer stags, but compared to a buff, lion or bear the risk they pose is laughable. Push feed feels smoother, and if it doesn't feed it's no big deal. The ability to cycle in any position just...

    CZ550 ejection issue

Mine did that at first. I think it must have been burrs in the action because after a good amount of cycling the bolt whilst watching TV and running dummy rounds through it, the problem fixed itself.

    .45-70 for Elephant

I missed it the first time around so have enjoyed reading it if I'm honest! It made me smile more than once, and also got me angry a couple of times. As for the .45-70 for elephant, well it was featured in Jurassic Park wasn't it... If it'll kill a T-Rex in a film then it'll surely work on an...

Is there such a thing as too big?

Welcome to the forum. A bit of a late response but I've just come back and found a few replies since my previous comment. Experience shooting small plains game and deer with big bores?

Thanks very much for all the replies. You've put my mind at ease, I'll give it a go. I've got 350gr Barnes TSX at the moment, I don't suppose they will open up too fast on a small deer. To answer a couple of things that came up - getting deer stalking with the rifle was no bother. The land...

I've finally reached the point of being comfortable with my .416!

That's a pretty rifle! I have a 1.5-5 Leupold here too - the illuminated dot stopped working so I'm sending it in to be repaired. They're good scopes with good backup if they do ever fail.

Experience shooting small plains game and deer with big bores?

Hi guys. I'm after some feedback please regarding shooting smaller animals with large calibre rifles. I want to take my .416 Rigby out for deer to get more field experience with the gun. The deer I generally shoot are around 15-30kg. How will it perform? I'm currently using 350gr Barnes TSX but...

I've finally reached the point of being comfortable with my .416!

I do really like the gun. I'm itching to get out and deer hunt with it but was holding back until I was properly comfortable shooting it. I've got a long eye relief 1.7-10x scope on it so it should be good even for fairly small species at decent ranges.
  49. njc110381

I've finally reached the point of being comfortable with my .416!

Funny you should say that. I like the idea of a Jeffery or Gibbs! The trouble is that in the UK we need to justify use. Ranges need to be approved and generally max out at 7000 joules/5162ft-lbs as the maximum allowable energy. To use it on other land needs another condition and generally you're...

I've finally reached the point of being comfortable with my .416!

Thanks Rum Runner - I shall take that as a good tip and try to learn from your mistake. I'll get comfortable but try not to be complacent. Generally I find that most things bite me once I'm used to them and pay a little less attention than perhaps I should!
