I think that you are on the right track. I had Reto build a left hand 404J on a GM SB Small Ring action a couple years ago. Superb rifle, but expensive. There are others who do good work and will charge less. I have been happy with the work that Aaron Little has done for me tha past couple of...
The locking hubs were a popular dealer installed ‘option’. The ones sold on my new 1972 FJ40 were Warn hubs. If factory installed they would have been Aisin hubs.
Same color as my first FJ40, bought new in 1972 ($3800 out the door). I've had five TLCs since, including my current 2001 100 series and my 1993 FZJ73 - a six cylinder diesel. For over 50 years I have owned Landcruisers!
Congratulations on a very nice 'Cruiser!
I took a jacket and wore it in the chilly mornings, but it stayed in the safari car while hunting. Wear dark green, gray, or brown clothes - cotton or whatever. I would NEVER wear a 'safari jacket' and be a Stuart Granger look-alike.
For a 3 week safari I packed everything I took in a medium...
John McLaughlin of Helena MT has done the metal work on three of my Model 70 rebarreling, profiling, truing actions, chambering, crowning. He is an excellent metalsmith.
RWS offers (or once offered) loaded ammunition for the 404 Jeffery (10.75 X 73) with 400 grain projectiles. I believe that DWM provide some big bore cartridges as well.
What kind of partnership? If become an 'agent' you assume liability. If a distributor not so much, but this is a contractual issue between the principal and the distributor. If you are a 'private label' reseller you really need to find a way to share any liability with the principal through your...
This looks like a very nice rifle and a motivated seller. This is a good price for what is ooffered. I have a M70 .375 H&H and it is very accurate and easy to shoot.
That's a beautiful rifle!
You don't need a sling in the safari car but some of those buffalo stalks can get long and warm. I like a sling for that.
There is a sling that is designed for shotgunners that simply loops over the stock and barrel - no studs.
I have a Ruger No. 1 in 25-'06 with Brux barrel. Jard trigger. custom forend hanger and custom walnut stock. It is a shooter. I am not sure that it is the right platform for a 458 WM, however.
Non Negotiable for a SERIOUS hunting rifle...
Mauser 98 or Win Model 70 (or clone)
The best barrel I can buy
Sub 1" precision
Not too heavy
Nice to look at
I expect that you could find a LH Win Model 70 in 300 WM... after a bit of searching. Splendid rifles, wood stocks. and they shoot well.
I'm a righty, but left eye dominant, so I shoot left handed. I've found three LH Win Model 70s and bought all of them.
For shooting buff with the 375 H&H and 300 gr. SAFs I expect that you don't need to max out velocity.A fast load will shoot entirely through a bull standing broadside.
I have a Ruger M77 mrkII in .30-'06.
Likes: Not expensive, controlled round feed, three position safety, smooth operation & moderate weight.
Dislikes: Trigger a bit rough and complicated, some barrels are rough and others fine. action design is homely. Barrel too short.
I have a very early Dakota 76. I exchanged emails and calls with Ward and the team at Parkwest Arms last week. Very responsive and knowledgeable folks. I mailed my rifle to them for some minor work right after talking to them.
I have a left hand Dakota M76 SA Alpine Model in (factory) .257 Roberts chambering serial no. K002XL. It has good wood, a Pachmyr Decelerator pad, Leupold style factory scope blocks and rings. It has fine checkering and no cheek piece. I do not know the DOM, but the people at Parkwest told me it...
Like AZDave, I live in Coues country and often seen them either on my place or when out hunting quail.
I have hunted deer from British Columbia to Mexico and rate the Coues whitetail as the toughest deer to bring to bag. They are wary and easily spooked - masters of the sneak.
Some really...
I've gone through a 7X61 S&H, a 7X57, a 7mm RM, and a 280AI. Still have the last two and don't think I need more. ALL of these cartridges did well for me.
I hope Federal is successful.
I have a dozen or so wood stocked rifles but just ordered a CF stock from Bansner's for my current build - a lightweight M70 mountain rifle. I may also get a walnut stock made for it, maybe.
We have a lot of choices in rifles today, including left hand models in limited calibers, but overall...
My rifle is for hunting but is very accurate.
LH Win M70 classic action
24" Krieger barrel
Schmidt & Bender 2.3 - 10 X 40 Summit scope
Talley rings
Walnut stock and metal work by Aaron Little.
Three shot gr0up @ 100 yards:
I've seen this with my initial loads for my 404. Headspace is usually the problem. Try your once fired brass in the rifle before resizing... it should fit fine - then just size enough to bump the shoulder .005" - .008" while resizing the neck. TRY ALL THE LOADED ROUNDS in the magazine. and feed...
I am loading 404J with:
RWS or Norma brass
Swift AFrame 400 grain bullet
Rem 9-1/2M primers
VV N-150 76 grains
Velocity is 2280 -2295 fps
I have loaded up to 2400+ fps, but there is no need for that speed. I try to stay at about 2300 fps. Kills buff like a hammer and recoil is no problem.
Swift AFrame of .40"+ diameter and at least 400 grains. at least 2300 fps. Shoulder shot aimed to destroy shoulder, ribs, lungs, upper heart/arteries, followed by more lungs, ribs, shoulder.
I have the Sunnyhill extended bottom metal on my 'Classic' M70 .375 H&H rifle. It holds 4 down and works just fine. I had a custom stock made so that it fit properly. It is designed to use the standard magazine that came with the rifle.
Here is a photo prior to final stock finishing...
Very generous of you, BeeMaa. A good friend and hunting partner gifted me a LeadSled a couple years ago. Came in handy when developing loads for my 404 Jeffery!
Thanks you for your kind assessment.
I'll try to get a few more photos... but it's quail season right now so it may be a little...
