Enter the Minefield of Double Rifles from Baikal

Since this thread was brought back, what level of .45-70 loads do you use? There are 3, #1 trapdoor, #2 Marlin 95, & #3 Ruger #1. Certainly not Ruger loads, possibly Marlin? Just curious.

    45-70 dangerous game?

Actually according to the Hornaday 11th edition loading manual, pg 741. The max load for 450-400 with the the 400gr DGX Bonded & DGS is 2150 with a max load of 88.9gr of Vit H-165. So that 400gr Speer load I used to use is very close to the 450-400.

    45-70 dangerous game?

Oh that Speer 400gr bullet from the #1 is awfully close to the 450-400 ballistics!

    45-70 dangerous game?

My dog isn't in this fight, however I am a huge fan of the .45-70. I have personally chronographed a 405gr jacketed bullet out of a 95 Marlin at just under 1800fps. I have also chronographed a 400gr Speer at 2196fps from a Ruger #1 & a 500gr Hornaday soft & solid, at 1800fps from a Ruger #1. The...

I read an article that suggested try a powder & if it didn’t group well with a load that’s not maximum, try a different powder with a similar burn rating. He said that rifles often show a marked preference for one powder. Try one with a safe load & if it doesn’t group well try the other powder...

Yes & unscrew the aperture, put it in a safe place, you have a very quick to use ghost ring sight.

Best .45 ACP round for black bear protection

Guess I spoke to soon, I apologize for mentioning the 10. The topic was what's the best .45 ACP round for defense against a black bear. NOT which is a better cartridge. Wish folks wouldn't derail a topic with their favorite ctg.

    Bolt or a #1

I have loaded the #1 in .45-70 to a chronographed 1800fps with the 500gr Hornady. Its recoil was beyond unpleasant, the .458 #1 would be heavier, but you'd also have more velocity. I love the #1, but I stop at the .375!

I need some guidance as I develop loads for my new 6.5x55

I have never loaded for a drilling, the shotgun bbls could influence your loading? I am a big fan of starting low & working up slowly. I would be more after accuracy than velocity. Good luck, & please keep us informed, that sounds like a very nice gun.

    9.3x62mm vs. .375 H&H Mag

The 9.3X62 is a great ctg, I’m not getting into which is better. Once a fellow asked me why I hunt with a .375, my answer was because on game like our Elk, angles don’t matter. Aim at what you want to hit & press the trigger. The 9.3 probably falls into the same nitch.;) And we do have grizzlies...
