We don't have a tipping culture in Australia, so this is a bit daunting. My son and I are hunting Eastern Cape in August and until now, I haven't budgetted for tips. Our spiral horned slam hunt and 12 days will cost about US$18K or AU$25K - this is already a stretch for us. So I should take an...
I'm fortunate enough to own a WJ Jeffery DR in 450-400 3". I have a photo from the International Big Game Rifle Competition in Darwin - taken in August 2024 - with 6 competitors holding WJ Jeffery Double Rifles in the same caliber. Not likely to be seen again. I'll dig the photo out and post it...
Will do! But I'm currently planning a trip to NZ in May next year to hunt Sika Deer, Chamois and Tahr - we'll be taking a couple of Weatherbys for that. Buffalo hopefully get onto Buffalo with the Jeffery DR late next year.
Thanks Hookboy - it was! Hunting with my son is an annual event now (suggested by his beautiful partner) and I enjoy every part of it - the planning and preparation, through the travel and hunting to receiving the trophies - all of it.
Day Four
We were up at dawn again, first looking for our second meat deer and then hoping to complete the Grand Slam for Niall Station with a dog. It was overcast and threatening rain all day, so much cooler than previous days.
Tom spotted a family of deer from the road, not far from the...
Day Three
Today we explored a part of the property on the Clark River that Dan had never been to before. We covered a lot of ground in the buggy and arrived at the river around 08:00. As we roughly paralleled the river, we drove into a deeply shaded grove that had been recently ploughed by...
Not usually - as omnivores they get into some pretty disgusting stuff and are often full of parasites that I don't want to risk. I have taken the meat from some young sows in the past. I only had room for venison this trip.
Day Two
We got up at 4:30 because Dan’s phone (alarm) had switched to Daylight Saving time (LOL).
The stags had been roaring (screaming better describes a Chital Stag's Roar) all night from the other side of the creek to the homestead, so we mounted the e-bikes and headed to the source. We...
Day One – 01 OCT 2022
We were up before dawn and after a quick coffee and toast we were on the e-bikes for the 5-minute ride to an area where a “monster” had been sighted a few days earlier. In the pre-dawn light we left the e-bikes beside the fence and scanning the open flat where the stag had...
My younger son (Tom) and I started a tradition last year when we hunted Cape York for Bulls and Boars. This year we went to Niall Station with Dan Smith (Master Bowhunter) to hunt our first Chital Deer.
Tom (32) is the younger of my 2 boys and we enjoy participating in the monthly shoot at the...
Excellent! I agree that the video/photos are a better trophy of the trip - you can look/re-live/share wherever you are. Mounted trophies you can only see at home. Well done.
“one of Britain's top trophy hunters” and "killed hundreds of animals" - well done that man!
You've contributed far more to Africa and the conservation of wildlife than this excuse for a journalist could dream of.
Good to see you've joined Rule 303! I imagine not many of the AH members understand the significance of your handle and probably haven't heard of Breaker Morant......
Yep - I've found that most shooters are pretty good blokes - I owe a lot to GeoffB - he got me back into shooting after a hiatus while I had a family (2 boys and 2 girls) and he's an absolute walking encyclopedia of knowledge shooting/hunting/ballistics. I shot my first Red and Fallow deer under...
My 9.3x74R Double - similar to 375H&H ballistics - is a 7.5lb rifle. Not even in the same ballpark as the 458 Lott for recoil. Love shooting the Sabatti
Yes, I’ll be at the Wattle Grove range on Sunday to sight my 45-70 Bergara and my 458JCE with a 1-8x Nightforce. The 2.5-8x32 Zeiss Conquest failed (condensation on the objective lens) on my Cape York hunt in October.
