    Highveld Taxidermy experience?

I think our trophies are likely in the same container, just arrived into Houston on the Aramis. I live outside Houston so we are going to pick up directly here when they are cleared in a few weeks…

    Broadheads

Sure, but again - this is not a statistically sound claim based on sample size or repeatability, and you’re still missing more important factors for penetration - the most critical things are strength and stability and especially, arrow flight. Screwing on heavier heads to an existing arrow...

    Broadheads

I agree in some sense. For max penetration, holding all else equal, yes definitely go ahead and crank up arrow weight and FOC. to get the best performance on medium sized plains game, for a variety of hunting scenarios, a more well balanced approach with perfect arrow flight is going to be far...

Sir I assure you I am familiar. I’ve read all the Ashby studies, and I have his book. I only speak ill of this folly because I have followed it before and was LESS successful with it. I’m happy to go into this with you though. As well meaning as Ashby is (I’ll avoid the term Dr. because his...

    Broadheads

You are describing my heavy set up quite accurately sir. For most plains game, including the light skinned kudu, I will say these weights are excessive. If you are sitting water and only shooting at 20 yards, sure shoot whatever. But at longer ranges you must consider yardage your sight is...

    Broadheads

I should note that those advocating for comically heavy setups as a must have seem to have exceptional media libraries full of fantastic harvests and great photos of their weapons of choice, and they seem to be exceptionally well experienced with said weapons! Should I choose to lay down the...

    Broadheads

I’ve zipped through multiple kudu, oryx, wildebeest with much lighter than this, in the low 500s. Arrow flight is by far the number one factor! That arrow needs to be built and tuned to fly perfect. The weight is a consequence thereof. I don’t advocate super light but 650gr is wild to list as...

    Broadheads

This is fine advice for the heaviest of game but cmon now, surely you have been affected by some of the online propaganda here Mr. Rookhawk. Recommending a 200gr+ head is laughable for the game mentioned. 160-200 spine arrow is equally wild for the game he is chasing. Also, how on earth are you...
  10. Joey17

    Broadheads

He wrote grain spine, which shows a lack of understanding on his part, and I’ll bet anything he’s referring to spine - no arrow has 400 grain just printed on it. Furthermore, telling someone to double their head weight without changing the arrow is always poor advice. Also 525 is in no way too...
  11. Joey17

    Broadheads

This is some horrible advice. Your 400 spine arrows with 200gr heads will certainly be underpinned and not fly well. Make sure your arrows are flying perfectly straight, first of all. From there, sharpness and structural integrity is critical. I’m happy to respond to any specific questions, and...

Why nobody on this forum talks about Jeff Rann Safaris?

While I agree that his name doesn’t come up much, I would imagine most of your folks here are familiar with him. It seems like with the growth in online information about Africa a lot of noise crowds out the originals, but for many, myself included, he was one of the first high end DG PHs they...

    Recommendations for a new bow?

As others have said - go shoot them! I’ve had great luck with Hoyt. If you really struggle to choose, which many do, I say you find the nearest bow shop you really really like, find the best tech there, become his friend, and see what he likes working on best. A good relationship with Those guys...

Your plains Game Archery set up for 2025

Marc, you always struck me as someone with excellent judgement, so the IWs are no surprise to me if I had to pick just one for all time, iron will would be my choice. My old man is handicapped and shoots a ravin crossbow - he shot expandables for a bit but once I got him on QAD exodus and...

Your plains Game Archery set up for 2025

I’ve gone to never removing my quiver, just going for max consistency. If I were to build a new bow today I may even do a 2 piece. I’ve used a wide variety in my life, but I’ve returned to almost all fixed blades. Once I got it dialed and tuned (and everyone should, even if shooting...

Your plains Game Archery set up for 2025

I can certainly see the allure of the shorter bow for the stalk - thing is, even if I did get the short ata bow, my arrows would hang well beyond the limbs and cams. Weight still a factor, but I don’t like the arrows(either quiver hood or nocks) hanging out for me personally

Agree with rookhawk. Would also recommend a bag target in the house and extensive blank bale practice.

Your plains Game Archery set up for 2025

That RS looks sweet but I’m no good with a real short bow. I’m sticking with my Ventum pro 33 with a UV slider - third sight I’ve had on it but I’m settled for now. And while it’s a bit heavier bow, it does the job for me when I do my part, and is currently sitting around 67 big game harvests...

Are Neck Shots Preferred Than Broadside Shot To Prevent The Damage Of The Meat?

I have seen multiple jaws shot off and 2 deer with wounds laid open on the upper neck from what I presume were failed headshots. No head or neck shots on my place unless you can hit a baseball 10 out of 10 from 150 yards. Nobody has taken me up on the challenge to qualify.

Bowhunting Africa from a Blind or tree stand, do it!

@Niki.NE I’d encourage you to stick with it with the bow. I’ve gone with multiple outfits and have my thoughts on some of the differences between them, but I really recommend not picking up the rifle if you want to bowhunt. Assuming you’re with a good outfit, you’ll have ample opportunities - be...

    What Animals

Lot of good points made above. Many folks get caught up in specifics of areas - important, sure, but I think a good outfitter and PH have more impact on your hunt than whether you hunted 30k or 40k hectares. Based on your list, I’m assuming you’re looking at SA. Honestly, IMO, don’t be...
