Hunting reports
Africa

I made a post last week and had several of the guys on her give some great advice. I appreciate the input and advice you give. As I have stated in the other post, I will making plans on an African safari in the future. I know I seem to be jumping around a tad, but that's from lack of knowledge of African and dealing with outfitters. Planing a trip of the size is very overwhelming for me to imagine.

I have thought hard about going to the DSC next Jan. to talk to outfitters and see what they provide. I want a PG hunt in an "untamed" area. I don't want a hunt that's canned...I want to hunt! Some have said that Taz. is pretty remote and wild compared to the other countries. I'm thinking of tent hunts, chasing PG through Old Africa, sitting around a camp fire at the end of the day after eating a nice meal.

Can you guys give me outfitters in Taz that you have hunted with or know that are great outfits to work with. I want my first trip to Africa to be great and not a disappointment. I want a place that you would book a hunt with or send your son on a hunt to. If you have hunted with a outfitter in another country that was a great experience and was in a remote area and that you would highly recommend give me the name. I really appreciate the help. Sorry to keep asking questions but it's a big step for me.

I've never hunted Tanzania. But I've hunted more expensive places, and there aren't that many of those! Tanzania is probably in the top two or three most expensive places in Africa to hunt. And I will get there one day!

When you say expensive...Please elaborate? So for PG what are you expecting to pay? I've checked several other countries and PG are around $5,900 to $6,900. What can I expect there?

You may want to talk to an operator (or booking agent) about pricing in Tanzania. It is traditionally one of the most expensive countries to hunt. The more remote and the more exclusive the area the higher the cost can be to hunt in general.

My first African safari was in Selous Block LU5 in Tanzania. I had a 10 day license which included 2 buffalo, and one of the each of the following: Wildebeest, hartebeest, warthog, impala, zebra (all of which I took) and maybe a bush pig of which I never saw one. To hunt more plainsgame you had to buy a 16 or 21 day license. These would include eland, waterbuck, sable, etc.

There are deals to be made, but to buy a 16 day license to a remote area to hunt a good variety of plainsgame will cost well in access of $6900. Just a charter flight to a remote area in Tanzania can cost nearly that much.

I mentioned Mokore Safari's area in Mozambique in another post (I have also hunted there). I would assume you would want to book around 10 days. Day rates for that area are probably in the $500 or so range for plainsgame. That gets you to $5000.00 before pulling the trigger.

Out of curiosity what are you looking to hunt and for how long in that $5900 to $6900 price range in other countries.

Tanzania is $100,000 Safari. So you must know your budget. Namibia is my recommendation for a first Safari but there are so many choices. As stated you are new to this so the first question is budget. Are you on a $10K budget or $25K or $100K? That will arrange your choices then go from there.

Philip
PS there is virtually no such thing as canned hunting so please let's dispense with that concern.

Thank you I totally agree

I think it is important to establish your budget and what you would like to hunt for that budget before you pick your destination. Tanzania is not a cheap destination and cant see you having a good safari for the mentioned figures. With the figures you mentioned a South-African hunt is more realistic.

Yes sir you need to start with your budget and work backwards.

Or budget to your expectations and save accordingly.

There are people that actually do not want to drive through a fence to start their hunt. I am not calling it canned hunting, but there is a huge difference between a ranch hunt and a truly wild hunt. Some people want to sleep in a tented camp, not the most fancy chalet. Some people want to listen to the lion roar, leopard cough, elephants, and hippo at night. In reality there is not much difference in the actual hunting between a ranch and "wild" Africa, but in my opinion there is a huge difference in overall experience.

I am not knocking anybody that hunts on the ranches, many if not most thoroughly enjoy the experience. But by the same token the original poster has plainly stated in two post he wants to hunt in wild Africa.

He many need to adjust his budget depending on his wants, he may need to save a couple of more years, there may even be an adjustment to his expectations, but I guarantee if he really wants to hunt wild Africa for plains game it is achievable and for less than many think, just probably not Tanzania.

I will never regret going to Tanzania for my first safari.

Tanzani is a great place to go and I'd love to go there. The cost is a problem. I have seen some discounted buf hunts in the past in Tanz for under $15K. The government requires you to buy a license for the period of time you hunt for. Certain animals they require longer blocks of time. For PG in Tanz for 7 days you will do well to find it for under $12K. Sometimes air transfers can be $3-4K alone.
You would do well to look at other options for your budget. Some places in Namibia could give you the experience that you want. Go for 7 days and take 3-4 animals and then you might stay around your budget. Zim would be a great place to go. 7 days at $500/day will eat up a lot of your stated cost. But you would still get the experience and a couple of animals that you hunt hard for could be a blast. You might save up 1-2 yrs more and increase your budget. That might be the best idea for you given your goals.
RSA has some of the best hunting and pricing around. Most of it is fenced. I hunted 2 different properties last yr in RSA. One was 240,000 acres with no internal fences. That is like 375 Square miles. I saw the big 5 and had a great time there. The other was around 5000 acres or about 8 aquare miles. Still had
a good time and took a couple of good trophies. There are places in RSA that can do what you want at your current budget. Research will be very important to you in determining where you go. Bigger properties are going to help you with your expectations. Good luck. Bruce

Thanks to everyone on their input. Again, I am new to African hunting as well as the prices. I've visited many websites, everything from South Africa to Taz. I wasn't aware of the pricing being that much different other then the airfare to get you to further countries. I am aware of the price difference when it comes to specific animals but not in different countries.

I've looked hard at an outfit in Botswana that has great reviews. The reason I mentioned Taz being a country of interest is bc I have read that it really hasn't been touch by man. That sparked my interest. But that being said, I'm currently not financially strong enough to drop $100,000 but hopefully if things go as planned I will be able to in the future. Anyways, I was told for PG I can expect to spend around $6,000 for 1 Gemsbok, 1 Kudu, 1 Blue Wildebeest, 1 Eland, 1 Impala & 1 Jackal with 7 day stay. I feel that's not a bad price. I'm ok with paying that given the amount of animals to shoot and the length of stay.

I'm brain storming and asking questions. My mind is not set on anything in particular! My budget is set for $10,000. Not including my airfare. Ideas??????

Hi - I read through this whole chain and as I have said many times:
"I feel excited and a little sorry for a guy planning his first safari!"
What I mean by that is what a wealth of options, experiences and opinions to take in and sort out...it is difficult, and hard to decipher. Then try to walk onto the show floor at SCI or DSC and choose...your head will spin!
I see good advice here and that is nice - I am impressed as usual with the content from AH folks.
So... I am in my office in America today. I can speak with you and am happy to do so - I have several opinions and a few years of on the ground experience in many countries if you would like to hear it?
Best is to text me at 5735871234 and I will call you back.
Sincerely,
Nathan Askew

I'd make sure that $6.000 included pick up and drop off at the airport, all daily fees for lodging meals & PHs trucks, drivers, trackers , getting your trophies to a dip & ship or taxidermist, skinning etc. If your hunt includes all of the above and the animals you mentioned, you got one heck of a good price. I hope this hunt winds up being everything you thought it would be.

The $6,000 is for the animals listed, food, lodging, trackers and PH. Does not include pickup at airport, dipping or shipping trophies.

I saw you were looking for some Swift A-Frames for your 9.3. I just bought a bulk supply of them in the 285g. version. If Toby's are gone, I could let 100 go for $200 shipped you are interested.
Thanks,
Gary
