I just got done reading an article that said, basically, you can use 3 cartridges to use for worldwide hunting. # 1 was pretty much a given. #2 was a total shock, and #3 was surprising, but understandable.
#1 - Varmint Cartridge: this can be any number of the .22 caliber high velocity rounds, ranging from .223 up to the newer .224 Valkyrie
#2 - Deer and a little heavier game up to elk, and moose, and will do double duty for African Plains Game: The .270 Winchester! Given the newer bullets intended for the less powerful 6.8 SPC II, the .270 can do double duty of being an outstanding varmint cartridge at even extreme ranges, and with the bullet tech catching up to the .270 caliber, can do an excellent job for hunting animals that have larger bodies, like elk, kudu, eland, with premium bullets. Use the 140 gr - 150 gr bullets to near max or max velocities.
#3 - Medium bore cartridges that will handle heavier game worldwide, and they hit above there “weight class”: these three are tied - 9.3x62, .35 Whelen, and the .338 Winchester Magnum!
For hunting in North America, a “heavy” rifle such as the .35 Whelen will handle the heaviest of game along with the North American dangerous game animals like Kodiak and Polar Bear. The 9.3x62 is the equivalent of the .35 Whelen, except used in Africa where legal.
