Good evening gentleman, I was wondering if any of you had experience with the .340 weatherby caliber. I caught wind of one forsale in my area in left hand no less. Unless there is a pressing reason why I shouldn't , I plan to track down this unicorn of a rifle and buy it post haste.

Thank you all for shareing your experiences.

Love it, and once you find a load or a reload that it likes it will do amazing things.

Mine loves Barnes TTSX 225 grain bullets at around 3000 fps. That is close to their factory loading that you will pay a little over $100 US for.

If I can find it I plan to reload. If heard as much as 250$ a box up here.

Had one and sold it. Wish I hadn't. Looking for another one. Recoil was decent and the rifle itself was very accurate with 210g rounds. Shop around and you will find ammo under a $100 cdn. Last box I bought I paid $89. You will like the Weatherby.

What size game would you consider it appropriate for at home? Abroad?
It is capable of taking any North American game animals with room to spare. For any other area all you are just restricted by the caliber restrictions.

thankyou that is exactly what I'm looking for. I'm hoping I can track down the seller tomorrow.

The .340 is my go too for elk. 225 TTSX
I took the elk in my avatar with it

I like my Browning A Bolt in .338 Win Mag for elk. The .340 Weatherby IS a great elk or larger game rifle too! I too prefer 225gr bullets for elk sized game.

Have one and used it in the West and Alaska and Africa. First Pg hunt in Africa I took a 300 Wby and the 340. Used 200 gr Swift A frames in the 300 and 225/250 Nosler part in the 340.Iit became obvious that the 340 was the more effective. The 340 went along on several more hunts.except where required by law it was used and its effect was never questioned by anyone.
It has been my go to for 30 years+.

I own an FN Mauser custom rifle built for this cartridge and I reload mostly the 250gr Game King bullet from Sierra that work well at long range on game like ibex or wapitis for example. With more modern bullets , it is an good all-round cartridge for all African game species except DG.

IMHO it is a very good magnum cartridge caliber 338 for a hunting rifle. Other cartridges with also very good ballistic , such as the cartridge 338 Lapua Magnum for example , need rifles that are much larger and heavier.

Thank you all you've convinced me (though to be fair that was no big job) just trying to track down the owner to view the rifle.

I actually fell in love with the cartridge way back in the 60's when I first read about it.

It is a very unique round that has capabilities way beyond its caliber.

Can anyone give me a estimate on price the rifle has a nice wooden stock with a lot of checkering and an for cape. The blueing and bore look good, there is a vintage Leopold scope.

The gentleman is asking 1500 Canadian is that a fair price. He also has two boxes of Norma weatherby ammunition. @Luvthunt @krish @CoElkHunter
@JimP @kurpfalzjäger

I'd buy it for that in a heart beat, perhaps offer him a couple hundred less and see what he says. Remember you can always come up.

There is a .340 on Gunbroker right now with a glass stock with a starting bid at $1600 US with no scope.

What make and model of rifle is this? I’m assuming it’s a Weatherby rifle, but Mark V or Vanguard? My eyes are tired, maybe I missed this info? This will greatly determine the fair market value of the rifle your looking to buy. I just checked $1500.00 Canadian is $1148.00 US. Left hand with a vintage Leupold scope, sounds like a good deal, but I’d still like to confirm the make and model? Just my cheap a** self when looking to buy something!

The old gentleman called it a lasermark

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS FOR MY RIFLE, ALWAYS APPROACH A NEW LOAD CAUTIOUSLY!!*
Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}
Peterson .280AI brass, CCI 200 primers, 56.5gr of 4831SC, 184gr Berger Hybrid.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
