Rifle build in progress. Action has been barreled and I have the factory bottom metal. It’s a Dakota 76, magnum length action.

2 questions for you all. Current set up allows 3 down in the mag. Has anyone modified or done a drop box for this set up to get 4/5 rounds down?

Second, I’ve narrowed down and talked to a few stock makers but I’d like your opinions on who you’d use for a rifle of this caliber. I live in a humid environment so I’d rather not send my well seasoned blank to Arizona…

Thanks all

LeRoy Barry at Canyon Creek stocked my Lott. Back when AHR was in the CZ game, LeRoy did much of their stock work. The rifle on the left is my M70 in .458 Lott. The rifle in the middle is my buddy’s CZ in .458 Lott. Both were stocked by LeRoy.

All great looking rifles. The PH’s rifle looks like it may have a few stories to tell

These are magnificent. May I ask what's on the right?

I'm sorry to sidetrack your OP, but someone will steer ya in the right direction. Does Anyone Know Who Built That 450 Ackley?

Either have an eye for Expensive Taste "Unfortunately", or not .. but that's an Inspiration!
Thank You.

I can’t recall who built Clive’s rifle. Someone on AH has its twin. They may chime in.

With the complete understanding that "more is better"...why is it soooo important to go from 3 down to 4 or 5? Wouldn't it be more important to keep the rifle slim and lively to be able to make those quick shots everyone talks about? Isn't this why everyone has ammo carriers and ammo belts to reload from?

Do people truly believe they can shoot (accurately) and cycle the action, in a stressful situation, more than 3 time (accounting for the 3 down & 1 in the tube) and still have time to do anything before a buffalo closes the distance?

Time for some math...

Shot to shot is about 1.5 with a DG caliber rifle. So 4 shots gives a total of 4.5 seconds, only accounting for the time between shots to cycle the action, aim and shoot. A cape buffalo can run at speeds up to 37 miles/hour or 54 feet/second.

So call it 250 feet (84 yards) can be covered in the time it takes to shoot 4 rounds. Do you truly believe you will have time to even take that 5th or 6th shot?

Fair points. I’ll have plenty on my belt as well. Just seeing what reasonable options there are to squeeze 1 more down just in case.

Fair enough. If nothing else, it would increase the potential resale value of your rifle. Just didn't want you breaking the bank looking for minimal gains.

Yeah, never heard of a buffalo being shot more than 3or 4 times.

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
