The 470 NE ft-lbs energy of 5,140 while the 416 Remington can have gr loads of up to 5,438 and it’s seen ads great round for American buffalo, brown bear and moose and while the 470 is often pricy some aren’t to expensive even now so would it be practical or betrer to grab the 375 or 416 instead

It’s all on what you want. I own both and with the right loads they are good for anything earth . Just figure out what fits your budget better, reloading will make it easier and cheaper to experiment with. Either caliber will be fun to play with.

If you’ve got the scratch for a 470, by all means. If not, the 416 and 375 can be fun in NA. The 375 is a great elk, moose, bison, and bear cartridge. The 416 is a super stopper for big bears, but overkill for anything else in NA.

I confess that I’ve recently become something of a doubles man for big bore rifles (after buying my new .600 Nitro Express), but in my humble opinion … the .375 Holland & Holland Magnum is the best choice for all North American game (from Alaskan Grizzlies downwards). Not too overpowered, not too underpowered. And will offer you flat enough trajectory for some of the longer ranged shots in North American country (far flatter at said ranges than anything the .470 Nitro Express could ever accomplish). The 416 Rem Mag comes as a close second choice.

Go get a 470 ...you got plenty of pigs there to practice on....and no reason not to hunt whatever you want to with it....just can't shoot from as far...but presume same with some muzzle loaders....so get looking for one now!!!!... :A Thumbs Up: (p.s. or be boring and get a .375 thing....:E Sleeping::E Sleeping::E Sleeping::E Sleeping::E Rofl:)

@Newtothis first let me say that I'm about to purchase my second double, which makes no sense cause I can only shoot one gun at a time and my first is a 500NE. So you probably shouldn't pay any attention to what I'm about to say cause clearly I'm not thinking straight. And there does seem to be this "thing" that happens when you buy a double- you almost immediately need more of them- I don't know why- so I'm going to do my best to warn you off of them.

A 375 (or a 416) in North America? Really? Why? (I'm gonna catch hell for this one) I mean I could shoot a LAW rocket at a brown bear or moose I suppose but why? I've heard rumors of Cape buffalo in Texas but there are no American Buffalo. There is a Bison which some folks seem to confuse with buffalo, just like some folks confuse Pronghorns with antelopes or goats. (folks I'm just having fun here)

IMHO, the sweet North American caliber is a 300 magnum. Okay, maybe not for a Bison. Could be considered a little light for a Yukon Moose or a Brown Bear. For those I prefer a Jim Brockman Marlin Guide 1895 45-70 SS Gun. A sweeter, smoother lever gun I've never seen.

And if it's sacrilegious to take a lever gun to Africa isn't it just as sacrilegious to use an African gun in America?

I've kinda drifted of course here haven't I? Can you tell I'm still on my first cup of coffee? I did OD last night on Buzz Charlton videos. Am I rambling?

Ok, ok sorry, I'll get back on track. @Newtothis if you plan on hunting Africa some day. If you even think you might hunt Africa someday. Heck if all you'll ever do is dream of hunting Africa someday, I say buy that 470 Double. You too can watch hunting videos while caressing it. (did I say that out loud?)

I didn't help at all did I.

:)

Thats some of the reason I went with my first rifle in 470, even though was advised by some to go with a 375 bolt.

Some Non American game taken with various .375 Holland & Holland Magnums over the years.

Barring elephant #1 and Cape buffalo #1 and the water buffalo, all were one shot kills.

Instead of using a bow as in this video, use a 470. I am considering this type of hunt.

I would have picked a .450 NE, enbulk bullets or similar in .458 and .470 will always be a huge difference in costs for same number of items.

And if reload of lighter ammo goes as good as the standard load its even more to save for the use on the cartridge for number of scenarios.

Practical or not ? guns are a need ,not a practical need ha ha,ok some will argue with that, my first DR was a little petite 9.3,next was a 470,I have a few more now, including a bunch of bolt actions,I enjoy my guns,I reload for them all,the practical part went out the window a long time ago,but it does help me buy a new gun every now & then.

Nothing like holding those long 470 Nitro cases and dropping them into the barrels and hearing that beautiful "THUNK".

Love the 375, used it lots in North America too.

Wandering around in the Deer woods with a double in 470 is hard to describe , it is just awesome.

I got drawn for a quota deer hunt here at home, LBL in west KY. I plan to use my 470, now obviously there are choices that provide less restriction to your hunting options than the 470, but I have one and it seems like good practice for my upcoming hunt in Zim. I killed a deer last year with a 460 weatherby and a 375 H&H with iron sights last year just because it was fun. Do what makes you smile. If I kill a doe with that double it will be as exciting a trophy for me as killing a large buck with a higher tech bolt action.

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS FOR MY RIFLE, ALWAYS APPROACH A NEW LOAD CAUTIOUSLY!!*
Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}
Peterson .280AI brass, CCI 200 primers, 56.5gr of 4831SC, 184gr Berger Hybrid.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
