505 Gibbs bolt gun options

Westley Richards or Rigby would be happy to build you a bespoke anything

For folks like most of us who do have to ask the price, Montana is likely your best bet. Though a realistic alternative is the Blaser R8. They offer a .500 Jeffery barrel, and you can easily replace it with something more manageable when the novelty of the big Jeffery wears off.

If you want to spend the money and wait 6 -12 months, Granite Mountain Arms makes a highly regarded custom Mauser action. They will do a barreled action too, usually with a Krieger barrel. Then you take the barreled action and give it to a custom rifle maker, along with a lot more money and wait another 6-12 months.

A Ruger No. 1 can be used for a .505 Gibbs. Pac Nor can do the barrel, pre-fit or chambered to fit, leaving not a lot for you (or a local gunsmith) to complete.

I would also include Wayne at American Hunting Rifles. He is a true craftsman and his work is second to none. He is almost done making me a 505 Gibbs with a Granite Mountain Arms action. I’m having the action case hardened by Turnbull. I will definitely post pics when I receive it.

I guess the #1 is probably my favorite rifle. I have owned them in 416 Rigby, 470 NE, 375 HH, 300 Wby and 50-140 (500 NE). I really wanted to find a Gibbs in a bolt gun though.

I also looked at the Montana offering. I'm not at all familiar with their action but it looked to be very reasonably priced. It's a shame that Ruger didn't offer it in their safari bolt gun. That was a very handsome crossbolt rifle.

Depends on options...mine is $9,500 as quoted but it’s almost 3k for the action alone. I personally do not like the other options you mentioned as the cz‘ s action is not big enough to handle this bullet and the Montana rifle is marginal at best...they actually told me they would make the gun at 9 1/2 pounds

The Montana rifle, their largest action, is designed around the .505 Gibbs (at lease the bolt is...not sure about the rest). The issue with Montana Rifle Company has been overall quality. They're now under new ownership, though, so perhaps this has been addressed.

I have Ruger RSM in 505 Gibbs with a quarter rib. Wasn't cheap, I'm told 5 were custom made by a shop in AK that farmed out part of the project. I was told one was destroyed. At least one is still in AK. No idea where the other two are. Of course you could have one made.

Personally, were I in the market for one I'd not be adverse to a MRC in .505 Gibbs, the synthetic stock version. I'd change the sights, put on a barrel band front swivel, shorten the barrel to 23" and take it hunting.
