Hello all. New member here and I'm really enjoying the site. I have recently become very interested in purchasing a rifle in 9.3 x 62. Hopefully I get to hunt Africa someday but more than likely it will initially be used to hunt moose here in the US. It seems that this caliber is really demanding premium prices in even modestly priced rifles. For example, there is a Ruger M77 Hawkeye in 9.3x62 listed at $2500. Then a Winchester Model 70 Old African chambered in 9.3x62 Mauser by RJ Renner also listed at $2500. My question is are these prices realistic? The price isn't necessarily out of my budget, but it just seems a lot for what it is. What is your opinion and what direction would go if you were in the market for one?
Thanks

The 9,3x62, after languishing in the doldrums for many years due to a lack of ammunition and components, is back with a vengeance the last decade or so. It's a well-deserved comeback as well, as it's a fantastic cartridge that can be used on just about everything with the right loads.

As to price, this is a hard one. Prices vary from country to country. The Ruger Hawkeye in 9,3x62 is a wonderful rifle with a reliable control-feed action and good open sights, and it will certainly do the trick. I would buy the rifle that please both the eye and the budget. It it's the custom rather than the Ruger, all is well, too.

Good luck!

While I do love the nostalgia of the 9.3, for predominantly North American hunting I think the .35 Whelen is probably the better choice…

Rifles chambered in Whelen are generally more affordable for the same make/model… ammo is more readily available… reloading components are more readily available… and the 9.3 and the Whelen are nearly ballistic twins…

I’ve already got one 35 Whelen in the safe and am in the process of sourcing parts for building another one… it’s been a serious mid bore grocery getter and has taken everything from TX pigs to a monster eland…

Those prices are indeed an eye opener. I bought my Lipsey's Hawkeye 2nd hand, but unfired 2 years ago for $1000 from a gentleman who had made plans, but health issues just got in the way.

Oh, and it is now fired. I'll be taking it on its first trip across the pond this year.

Yes that's what bothers me, knowing that typically these guns should be at about half the prices I'm seeing. But I sure can't find any.

Sauer makes good stuff. Only drawback for me would be no iron sights but a good smith could fox that. There’s also a place called Gun Warehouse that says they have several 9,3x62’s

The Renner m70 is actually not a bad price. They’re basically a full custom rifle. It’s a $3k package + your donor rifle
I would say the Ruger’s price is ludicrous

Yes that's what I was thinking, that custom work was at least the price of the listing.

hi duke,

i think your choice of a 9.3x62 is a good one.

options i would consider are:
a. buy a 3006 and get it rebarreled
b. buy a 3006 and maybe get JES rebore to rebore the barrel on the rifle
c. buy a 8x7 and get the above options a/b done to it.

of course the easiest is to buy an 9.3x62 (with sights) sights can be added later if needed (i bought a 9.3x62 ruger m77 without sights and had them added) but a doner rifle can be purchased and improved to where you like it and keep you under 2500$ i suspect. keep in mind, custom rifles are almost never worth the money that was put into them.

another thought is just put WTB 9.3x62 on classifieds on this forum, you might find a seller.

good luck with your project.

That’s how I got my first one, donor shot out Zastava M70 8x57 Mauser $156.99,
ER Shaw 9,3x62 1:12 twist barrel $192.00, gun smith swap and set sights and coat barrel out $125.00 and done. One of the best rifles I’ve ever owned. Number 2 rifle I bought from a member here brand new in the box $700.00 cash on the barrel head. They are out there and surface periodically. I’d build another one if I couldn’t find one.

Thanks I hadn't thought about that. I actually own a couple 30-06s, one Rem 700. I'm not familiar with the process. Is it as simple as sending it to be re-barreled? What's a fair estimate for the re-barrel?

Yes it uses the same bolt face as an 06, mine was $192.00 for the barrel and $100.00 for barrel and sights installed.labor just depends on your gunsmith. Most are very reasonable.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
