Working on this rifle build for the wife and with the components we are using it looks like I may have the Smith spin up a 9.3x62 barrel to go along with it "just in case" she were to want to shoot some DG one day or even some of the larger PG. It seems this cartridge will be easier to get good feeding in the action we are using, plus it is on the same bolt face, also just kind of a cool cartridge that not everybody shoots.
Anyway, I know different countries have different rules about energy requirements and minimum diameter. Can anyone give me a quick run down on which countries it is NOT ok to hunt DG with the 9.3x62? I don't foresee this gun getting a lot of DG use, but if the wife were to really take to this hunting business I figured she might want to shoot a buffalo so I thought it would be good to know if going this route would be useful or not.

Legal in Zim on calibre, but not on energy. Nobody would ever say anything though as it is commonly used for DG there.
Not legal in Namibia on either calibre or power.
I think the rest is open.

Looks like it is a no go in Zambia too. Might have to work on a different plan to get her into a rifle with a little bigger bullet if we need it.

The best next option is the 375 Flanged Magnum for a double or the 375 H&H in a bolt. You can load the 375 H&H down. A 300 grain bullet at 2440 fps it will be legal on energy for Zim too, but much milder shooting.

Think it was to do in the old days when they decided I think to bring in a minimum cal for dangerous game, due to quite a few people using supposedly miraculous small bores and getting flattened..chewed and ending up with a headstone describing their final moments....so the .375 was chosen...

I never understood the minimum caliber requirement that ignores energy. My 9.3 goes 2505 with a 286gr bullet for 3985 FPE. That is on par with Federal's 375 load energy-wise. That extra .009" must be serious magic.
Yep, I’m wanting to do 9.3 on buffalo and zebra, eland , but nope it’s 375 or stay in camp for buff

As said it can be done in certain countries...Good write up on here by someone from SA, who took a buff in Namibia I think with his 9.3x62

As far as I know, there were before countries where the minimum was higher than .375 for hunting Big Game. I read something about 10mm or caliber 40.

Possibly French , Portuguese or Belgian colonies....not sure...I could be wrong in what I said.... :E Shrug:

Talking with a guide from Namibia in Nashville, it sounded like it would be OK for buffalo in Namibia. I was told no way by a guide from SA.

I’m not sure that is correct on Namibia. I believe there is an article on here about taking a buff in Namibia with a 9.3x62. What I understand:

1) legal in Zim. Energy requirement is easily met by handloaders if the factory loads concern you.
2) I believe that it is legal in Namibia. Check the article on AH with a well known outfitter. I doubt he would be publishing this if it were illegal.
3) legal in Mozambique.
4) Province by province in RSA but I believe could generally be used.
5) Not legal in Botswana, Zambia or Tanzania.

I may not have this exactly right so please correct where I have it wrong. The blanket statement that we hear so often that “the 9.3x62 is not legal for DG” is simply not true.

To address the 'build' scenario directly - I had a 9.3 made a bunch of years ago kinda for the same reasons. And although I know by the numbers it is perfectly capable to hunt buffalo, if I did it over, I would do a 375. To the point I am considering selling a bunch of my never-use-them rifles to do just that.

The funny thing here is that i'll never sell the 9.3 because it's got too much story behind it now - it was, shall we say, an interesting process... ;-)

I have read several times where 40 cal was chosen, was that wrong?
