A 14 twist .300 Win Mag

Can someone care to advise as to what would be best to use in a .300 Winchester Magnum with the 14 twist.
I ask 'best' but adequate will do lol.

I would tend to think light for caliber bullets moving really fast that would prefer a slower twist rate. But what's best I couldn't say, doubt that helps much, best I can say.

I reckon try something in 150gn with a hotter load. I'd suggest maybe a barnes ttsx 150gn?

What makes it in? Don't believe I've seen a 300 with that twist rate

don’t load my own ammunition. I buy it.
Not sure how many twists my Ruger #1 in 300 WM has.
Here is my last time out with Barnes 180.
The three shots sighted in at 200 on a target at 300 using a Nikon with DBC. If you look at the target I need to move it up in the first circle to just below center. The three shots are in a square inch.

They are one inch to two inch high. One inch to the left at three hundred yards.

What make rifle? Unless they were shooting low velocity cast bullets for a special application, I find it hard to believe anyone would chamber a 14 twist in that cartridge. Just for comparison, today's manufacture 30-30 Winchester rifles are 10 twist.

I played with some of the twist calculators on-line for a couple of minutes and you may be limited to a bullet about 1.15 inches in length, depending upon velocity. Knowing Speer bullets are short for length, you may be able to push the 165gr Grand Slam fast enough to be stable (3000 FPS should work). I looked at the 165gr Partition and it appears to be too long from the theoretical numbers.

Play with the twist calculators and the bullet you want to use and see if it will work out, theoretically.

I did a 30cal bullet line-up a few months ago, may give you some ideas on bullet lengths that could work.

I have a .300 mag with a 14 twist. It was built as an experiment on an old Aussie Maddco S/S barrel.
Nevil Madden use to make the 14 twist 3 groove barrels for the guys shooting .308 win in bench-rest with the 168gr Sierra HP back in the 80's. I bought a barrel from him back then but did not get it profiled and fitted until 15 years ago.
It will stabilise standard 180 gr bullets like Hornady SP, Sierra SP and Speer hot cores.
But it will not stabalise the modern longer VLD type of bullets in 180gr or heavier.
I have been using Barnes 150gr TTSX in it for years on everything up to Brumbies.
Its hits like the hammer of Thor on red deer and pigs.

I bought the rifle mail order not knowing it was a 14 twist. It was cobbled up by a 'gunsmith' If it will run 180`s then thats ok enough for me.GB

Its a P/Hale I have a PH.308 Norma mag barrel that will screw into it,maybe I should go that way instead of frigging about with the abnormal twist rate
