A thread derailed before it even began….

Every once and awhile it seems a thread takes on a life of its own. Generally someone asks an open ended question and allows room for it to be speculative and then stands back and watches the madness. Several jump out at me that keep popping up “what’s your favourite three calibers” and “what’s your dream safari” for example. It got me thinking about starting a thread purely for the entertainment value of it. So here is the challenge I’ve come up with.

Compile a list of gear you’d bring for a year off grid/alone. Now that to me is so open ended that we’d never get two answers remotely similar so let’s set some basic perimeters:
- all of your gear must fit into a 5x8x4 foot space ( a standard length truck box with cap)
- weight should be realistic to what a 1/2 truck could carry
-location is costal 45 degrees north
- not enough local vegetation to sustain draft animals for a year
-drop off will be the first day of spring
-from drop of to pick up 365 days later your completely self reliant. No outside contact help
-game animals are present but not overly abundant (your going to have to hunt for them)

Well there it is that’s my question , a thread like this is just asking to be derailed. So gentleman do your worst.

They count on shooting a moose, so the load going in is rice, flour, sugar, coffee, ammo, etc. you have to see it to believe it.

But first some questions to better/properly prepare:

What does "coastal 45° north" mean? Can you provide a general US state/Canadian province or other more definable location/area.

Mountainous, or "flat land": wooded or desert/tundra?

Surface water?

Hunting legally year round: with no restrictions?: small game, big game, both?

Fishing legally year round with no restrictions?

Trapping legally year round with no restrictions?

Home construction without limits or regulations? Do we get to keep the property after the one year mark?

Since I travel a lot....as in driving my 2011 Ford Ranger 4x4, extended cab, 5 speed stick shift, with tool box.

Plus my military experience in packing an AMC Jeep with cargo trailer.

A standard size truck with a camper shell, that means I can pack twice as much. But since it's only for a year I'll just add a few niceties, some more ammo, some more petro, chainsaw bar oil, and a helluva lot more pain pills and liquor. Pills for the extreme aches and pains and the extra liquor for the minor aches and pains at my age.

I was thinking BC or NWT Canada or maybe Quebec, Nova Scotia or Labrador. Or perhaps Maine.

I am good with that as well. That is with not being able to keep the vehicle. To me that means more fuel for the chain saw, tiller, and 1.5 kw generator.

The hookers probably dont care what type of boots or watch you have, so don't stress that. The land rover probably helps. As far as the pith helmet, not necessary but you might be charged extra.

.....Does or can a pith helmet be multi tasked like a US infantryman's "steel pot" (helmet with helmetliner)?

If the pith helmet can be multi tasked then yes! If not......how good is it as substitute shovel?

Me thinks I would forgo the pith helmet for a "D" handle shovel or an e-tool; ((US) entrenching tool) old style: spade and maddox heads.

Well, first you need one of those tricked out “bug out” PU trucks I’ve seen running all over the place the last couple of years. Tent rack and storage over the bed or paramilitary looking small camper shell with all manner gear strapped on like- GI gas cans, handy man jack, fire axe, shovel, snorkel on the window post, heavy duty skid plate and cow catcher on the front, over-sized aggressive tread tires, an AR decal on back window, every inch painted OD or flat battleship gray… but not a speck of mud or spot of dust anywhere. Never mind whether or not you know any thing about off grid survival, you certainly look impressive.
