Another generation of children exposed to animals with "human emotions"

I read somewhere that the Disney movie Bambi may have done more harm to anti-hunting deer sentiment than any other singular event in North American. Then in 1994 came the hugely popular Lion King movie with an even greater audience and exposure of African animals to the general populace. And now the Lion King remake with the most realistic animal/human emotion animation yet. The pic reflects the added realism from 1994 to the current movie.

Technically, I am a millennial , but these movies aggravate the hell out of me. But I also didn't grow up plopped in front of a TV for a babysitter either.

I loved Bambi as a kid, even had a custom made t-shirt. I also used it as an example of a false perception of hunters when having a discussion with my PETA member science teacher in high school. No doubt these movies portray animals with false emotions, thought processes, and empathy. When viewed at a young, impressionable age it can definitely leave lasting impressions even if we don't realize their origin. Fortunately most people look at things through a more complex and critical eye than what is a cute and cuddly cartoon once they mature. The downside is this movie, at this time, will probably stoke the anti "trophy hunting" fires for a short while.

Years ago I was banned from beddy bye story cause in the end of stories like " The Three Bears, " they all caught a hot loaded 350 grain round nose through the chest out of a custom Mauser.

It all depends on how the kids are actually brought up.

I had imaginary animal friends that my dad would tell me about. The cats name was Scarface but I don't remember the bears name. I also enjoyed the Bambi shows both on TV and at the show houses. But that never did keep me from going rabbit hunting to put Thumper into the stew pot or even Bambi into the freezer.

It is a lot like raising animals on a farm. I was eating dinner at a friends house one Sunday and we were having a beef roast. My friends little girl who was 4 or 5 at the time asked her dad who they were eating, he said that it was Sam. She pondered it for a moment as a 5 year old would and then proclaimed that Sam tasted real good. She knew that she could make pets of them and play with all the animals but sooner or later they would be the main course at dinner.

Being born and raised on a farm and eating what we raised knowing the name of supper was a normal thing. I will say that calling a roast or pork chop by did make a few friends uneasy. We did it all when I was young except smoking hams that was done by the local butcher.
Bambi came out when I was young and I had no problem with the talking animals but even at a young age I realized the bad light cast upon the hunters in that movie. Shooting every moving thing.
I made every effort to point out fiction from truth with my children when it comes to entertainment. I will say that when my boys decided to raise rabbits for 4H they were a little uneasy when they found out that rabbits multiply quickly and old dad was not going to feed all the new additions until they died of old age. The second time the herd needed thinned they beat me to it I came home from work and the freezer was full and the pens empty.
They watched Bambi and Lion King among other movies but also got the facts to go along with the fiction.
When the only information kids get is from entertainment it can sway them but if the difference is explained they will realize what the truth is.
