Anyone actually weigh their firearms to compare to advertised weights?

My CZ 550 in 458 win mag is 9.6 lbs. It was right on 9 lbs and I added some lead to the butt to bring it up to 9.6. That is with open sights and empty magazine. It is a nice rifle to shoot as far as 458 lott goes. CZ uses the same barrel profile so I know the 375 is heavier.

Had the scale out today and weighed a bunch of my guns for the first time to see where they clocked in, a few didn't weigh as advertised. This will be useful when calculating felt recoil values.

Merkel Double in 470NE with LPVO - Was told 11.5lbs, actual weight was 12.5lbs. (Should be good for soaking up recoil)

CZ550 in 416 Rigby, advertised as 9.3lbs naked, Actual weight was10.7lbs with scope and LPVO. (Still has a decent amount of recoil at this weight).

CZ550 in 375HH, advertised as 9.3lbs naked, Actual weight was 9.6lbs (very manageable)

Model 70 in 458 WM, advertised as 9.0lbs, Actual weight was 8.6lbs (explains the recoil++)

I'm planning on taking the LPVO off the double and topping it on the 458 to add a little extra weight.

Have you weighed your DG rifles and found any surprises?

I've been surprised many times. What a lot of people new to DRs don't realize is that the weight of the gun determines its value. A too heavy or too light DR renders it significantly diminished in value, comfort, and portability.

Most modern rifle stocks are hollow with a through bolt. This is for mass manufacturing purposes, but it also makes it hard to modify weight. I've removed wood from under the recoil pad many times to lighten rifles and shotguns to get them to balance, I've added recoil reducers and lead tape in various manners to add weight as well.

A 9.25lb naked 375HH bolt gun gets you to around 10.25lbs, a very pleasant, slightly heavy rifle. The textbook says they should be 8.75lbs naked.

A 10.75-11.25lb 470NE double is textbook perfect. With RMRs gaining popularity, they should be about 6 ounces too light naked to reach those numbers today in a perfect world.

I don't blame the manufacturers for the variances, density differences between wood is significant, their spec sheet numbers are averages that are +/- half a pound.

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
