Looking for your advice on the best cold weather thermos.
When I hunt here in Montana I like a thermos of coffee in my Polaris ranger for before and after my hunting . Who makes the best thermos for hot coffee at lunch in 25 degree weather ?
I’m No expert on hunting, rifles, or shotguns - but I KNOW Thermos’.
If all you want is a thermos that keeps stuff hot for 3-4 hours while sitting in your car then “most will work”. If you want a Thermos that you can fill the night before and have steaming hot coffee at sunrise - read on.
As two others mentioned the actual “Thermos” brand I can attest that they insulate as good as any Yeti and at 1/3 the price. I’ve conducted my own “tests” in my refrigerator and take my Thermos “seriously” (obsessively??). Get the larger models as Volume increases heat retention ie: a 1 quart model will stay warm longer then 1 pint size (all else being equal). Second, get the models completely enveloped in plastic (some have a molded in handle) vs. exposed stainless steel “vacuum bottle” type. The plastic shell protects the bottle from dents and offers additional heat retention.
Lastly, Stanley & Aladdin was an excellent model 30+ years ago - Not as good now and since made in China. Coleman also was great - in the 1980s but No longer. A good “full” one quart thermos should keep contents “burn-your-mouth-Hot for 24 hours in 50 degree weather and for 15 hours at freezing....this assumes Thermos kept Full and unopened - that “first opening” will be steaming 18-24 hours later depending on ambient temperatures.
Always Pre Heat thermos with hot or boiling water “before” filling with desired contents.
One more note - if you ever “dent” your vacuum bottle type thermos (even slightly) or if the “O ring” on cap deteriorates and therefore does not seal tightly— it will NOT insulate properly.
Buy a Yeti “decal” for your truck window but buy your Thermos at Walmart (when No one is looking !!). Now, if Yeti is sponsoring You - then by all means get 10 of them as they are excellent....but, I’d rather buy Thermos’ at Walmart and a New Benelli every Winter with the savings.
