1970 Browning (FN Mauser) High-Power Safari .308 Norma Magnum - 96% Condition plus missing rear sight. No signs of salt wood (no corrosion around cross bolts, or recoil pad bolts, no crumbly wood). The price feels like stealing. Talk me out of it.

You may be on the wrong forum for this….
if you want talked out of buying it, do you have a significant other?

on edit, for a low low flat fee, I can have my wife pretend you are me!

Buy it

Salt wood continued until 1972 although the bad years stopped in 1969. Ask the owner if you can have Art’s Gun and Sport Shop inspect the gun before purchasing.

Only issue I see is .308 Norma.
Will any other .300 mag chamber and fire form?

You can still get cases and possibly ammo (180 grain Oryx) from Norma USA. The ammo is still listed on their site and available from a few sources but I have seen it listed as discontinued on some sites.

Cases are between the .300 Win Mag and .338 Win Mag in body length. It has a longer neck than the .300 WM. You can use a 7mm RM or .338 WM and fire form or .300 WM and lay the shoulder back.

Unless the chamber is oversize it will completely clean up when recut to .300 WM. I don't plan to re-chamber it if I buy it though.

PS If you ever wondered why the .300 Win Mag was longer in body than the .338 Win Mag one of the theories was so it wouldn't underperform the existing .308 Norma Mag.

I'm fairly certain the stock is European Walnut and not American (Missouri Salt Wood?) or Claro (California Salt Wood).

If I'm wrong I don't think I will get hurt at the price. I'm just trying to talk myself out of another cartridge to load for.

Well if you pass on it, let me know where it is because one more to load for won’t bother me! Lol. Love the browning Safari’s

That's a good cartridge, I remember when they first came out. Both Oryx and A-Frame have a 180gr @ 2953fps which is no slowcoach. Buy the damn thing !

Hi 2L8,

Buy it!!! One of the last FN true Mauser rifles in a great cartridge! Still made by NORMA and/or very easy to reload from other existing cases.
Buy it!!!

Good luck

CF

If you are still concerned please PM me. I will gladly take this problem off your hands. I have a 308 Norma Mag as well as a sufficient supply of brass along with the necessary dies to reload for it. Your problem is solved!!

You guys do understand that while this is an FN Mauser (not a Sako) it is a Short Extractor correct?

Why ask us to talk you out of it? You seem to be doing a good job all by yourself.

If you don't want it, be a pal and pass along the info to one of the gentlemen here who wants it.

That's a wrap, on our first hunt of this years season.

Hunting conditions are a bit tougher in South Africa during the month of February, but can be just as rewarding if done right.
